Norway is located on the western and northernmost portion of the Scandinavian Peninsula and has an extensive coastline, facing the North Atlantic Ocean and the Barents Sea. The country shares a long eastern border with Sweden and is bordered by Finland and Russia to the north-east. The remote Arctic island of Jan Mayen and the archipelago of Svalbard also form part of Norway.
Norway is commonly divided into five major geographical regions (landsdeler). These regions are only geographical, they have no administrative purpose. Genealogy information in Norway is found at the county (fylke) and parish (sogn) level.
