Research Note

The Jefferson-Hemings relationship has been validated by researchers like Annette Gordon Reid, with the help of DNA samples, and it has been accepted as fact by countless sources, including the Thomas Jefferson Foundation, which runs Jefferson’s home and museum, Monticello.[1]

Plantations

Thomas Jefferson's landholdings in Albemarle County totaled some 5,000 acres. Measuring approximately eight square miles, it featured wooded hills, two small mountains, rolling pastures, streams and the Rivanna River, which provided waterpower to Monticello's mills and a waterway to the markets in Richmond and beyond. Outlying lands were divided into manageable parcels known as "quarter farms" and were run by resident overseers.[2]

To manage this vast estate, Jefferson divided the Monticello Plantation lands into four separate "farms."

Monticello, the "home farm," was situated on the slopes of a small mountain on the south side of the the Rivanna River and across the river from Shadwell. The Monticello House sits atop a hill on this property in Albemarle County, Virginia, USA. Monticello has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997.[3] Monticello was the home of approximately 130 enslaved persons.
Shadwell was the birthplace of Thomas Jefferson, and the main plantation of his father, Peter Jefferson. It was located on the north side of the Rihanna River. After Peter died in 1757, the plantation was divided between his two sons, Thomas and Randolph. In 1763, when Thomas attained the age of 21, he inherited 52 slaves and his portion of the estate amounting to several thousand acres encompassing the family estate and the nearby hilltop that became his Monticello home. Jefferson gave this plantation to his grandson, Thomas Jefferson Randolph, in 1812.
Tufton Farm (adjacent to Monticello) was one of Thomas Jefferson’s quarter farms and borders the Monticello plantation on the south side of the Rihanna River. The land was originally patented by Jefferson’s father, Peter Jefferson, as two separate tracts of 150 acres each, in 1740 and 1755.[4] [5]Thomas Jefferson inherited Tufton as part of his patrimony. The property at Tufton served as agricultural land, providing abundant crops and acting as an important food source for the Monticello plantation. Beginning in 1817, Tufton was managed by Jefferson’s grandson, Thomas Jefferson Randolph.
Lego Farm was located on the north side of the Rihanna River near Shadwell, in Albemarle County, Virginia. Jefferson purchased the 819 acre tract from Thomas Garth in 1774 or 1775. The transaction was completed by a deed dated 1783.[6]

Jefferson sought to further organize his farms by dividing them into agricultural fields of forty acres each. At Lego, Tufton, and Monticello combined, Jefferson had nearly 1,000 acres of land under cultivation. In addition, the three properties had almost 175 people living on them, including 135 enslaved people who worked the farms.[7]

Martha Wayles' inherited farms

In 1772 and 1773, Jefferson became the owner of two additional plantations and 135 more enslaved individuals as part of his marriage to Martha Wayles and her subsequent inheritance from his father-in-law John Wayles.[8] These farms included:

  1. Angola on the Appomattox River in Cumberland County.
  2. Poplar Forest, aka Bedford Farm, a 100 acre tract, which is in Bedford. Jefferson gave this tract to his daughter and son-in-law, Martha and Thomas Mann Randolph, in 1790 as a marriage gift along with six family groups of 27 slaves that used to be on Wingo Farm. (See the above FSP for the indenture document).
  3. Bear Creek is the north portion of the Poplar Forest plantation.
  4. Elk-hill plantation is in Goochland. Three hundred acres of Elk-hill was a component of the dowry for the marriage between Martha and Thomas Jefferson. The couple obtained additional property following Wayles’ death in May 1773. Jefferson purchased additional adjacent property by May 1783. In 1799, Jefferson sold Elk-hill with 669 acres to Thomas Augustus Taylor of Chesterfield County.[9]
  5. Bridge Quarter may have been in Amelia County.
  6. Crank's may be the plantation later called Willis Creek.
  7. Guinea Farm," later called Hors du Monde, was on the Appomattox River in Cumberland and Amelia counties.
  8. Indian Camp 1,200 acres in Cumberland (now Powhatan) County inherited by Jefferson's wife, Martha, through her mother, Martha Eppes Wayles, and sold by the Jeffersons in 1777.
  9. Judith's creek, aka Dun-lora was a plantation of 2,042 acres on the James River in Bedford, Campbell, and Amherst counties. It was sold in 1778 and 1810. The present city of Lynchburg incorporates part of it.
  10. Tucker Farm was part of the Poplar Forest plantation.
  11. Wingo Farm a 1,000-acre plantation on the northwest corner of the Poplar Forest plantation.

After his death in 1826, Thomas Jefferson's daughter, Martha (Jefferson) Randolph, was forced to sell the plantation and its enslaved workers to pay off her father's debts.
