Thenia was born in 1767.[1] She was the daughter of John Wayles and Betty Hemmings. In 1774, she was allotted to Thomas Jefferson "in right of his wife" upon the division of the estate of John Wayles. She is listed with Betty Hemmings in the Farm Book of Thomas Jefferson as an enslaved child at the Guinea farm. In 1774, she was moved to Elk-hill with Betty Hemings (page 18) and in 1783 she is listed again with Betty Hemings (page 24). She was sold to James Monroe (1758-1831)in 1794 along with 5 of her children[2][3]
Thenia Hemings passed away in 1795.
