Gateway Descendants from Edward III (American)

Edward III with The Black Prince.
The goal is to identify gateway ancestors with well-documented and proven descents from Edward III, king of England.

Use the Relationship Finder to find if you have a connection to Edward III, king of England (Plantagenet-70). Does your gateway ancestor appear below?

Do you have a gateway ancestor from a population group other than American colonial immigrants (e.g. Australian, South African, European, etc.)? Post them on G2G and we will create new categories and new lists to track them. The line must be very well documented.

Perhaps this is a very basic question but I am confused about the definition of Gateway Ancestors. Are they people in your past that are grandparents or do cousins count as Gateway Ancestors also? I am related to virtually everyone on the list as cousins.
posted by Larry Dunn
The first sentence in the original post has a link to a definition of gateway ancestors.

Basically though, a gateway ancestor can be thought of as that key ancestor that leads to a much larger population. In American genealogy, it is usually thought of as the immigrant ancestor that opens up into a much larger known English ancestry. Examples in your own ancestry might be Margaret Wyatt, Mark Lathrop, Peter Worden and Elizabeth Overton (I have not checked these). So of the 2000+ theoretical ancestors you might have in the 11th generation, I can quickly identify 4 gateway ancestors which lead to a much wider English ancestry. None however have a direct line to Edward III.

posted by Joe Cochoit
I am not sure of the goal of this exercise.

Are you searching for a lineal or (direct) or an indirect descendant to a gateway?

posted by Kathy Donaldson
Thank you for the question, Kathy. I wish I could pin it to the top. There are several goals for this exercise. To answer your most basic question, we are looking for direct lines only. Your privacy level is set too high for me to see your family tree and run the Relationship Finder to see your connection to Edward III. If you lower it one or two spots, we could check your line.

As to why do we do this... First, many people will say they have these connections to English nobility and but also say they don't know if it is correct or doubt that it is correct. This is a way to give people some confidence that yes, the connections have all been researched and their line is good.

Second, there is a relatively small number of gateway ancestors to Edward III. Richardson in his Royal Ancestry series only recognizes 70. This is a way to find and document more lines which are not generally known or accepted.

Finally, and most important to me, medieval genealogy was (and is) a mess on WikiTree because of the import of thousands of errors found on the internet through gedcoms in the early days of WikiTree. The great advantage of WikiTree is that we can correct those mistakes and clean the errors from WikiTree. I may say medieval genealogy is still a mess on WikiTree, but it is also the most accurate database of its kind on the internet and improving daily. This is a way to find those errors and fix them. I have corrected the genealogy of dozens or even hundreds of incorrect lines posted in this project and elsewhere. If your gateway ancestor is not on the lists above, there is likely a mistake somewhere. So, we look for it, research it, and correct the problem in WikiTree. Since we are looking at people so far back in time, we end up correcting the family tree of many thousands of WikiTree volunteers and others interested in genealogy.

Went thru the whole list on the relationship finder (We have 28 common ancestors on my Father's side mainly) and Edward III and I are cousins by way of His 2ndGreat Grandmother: Isabelle (Angouleme) de Lusignan, is my 22nd Great Grandmother. As everyone else on list I am related from 2nd cousin to 12th cousin by someone related to Edward III and I: all lead to these: John LeStrange, Joan Wydeville, Margaret De Tafford, Isabel Frowyk Haute, Alice (FitzPiers) de St John, Reverend William Skepper (surety Baron and puritan migration)

Only ones that didn't show a connection are the ones under working section. only maybe by marriage!

While not relevant to Edward III gateways it’s likely William Wentworth of NH has a descent from Edward I as follows:

1. Edward I 2. Elizabeth of Rhuddlan 3. Eleanor Bohun 4. Pernel Butler 5. Richard Talbot 6. Mary Talbot 7. Thomas Greene 8. Elizabeth Greene 9. Mary Sandford 10. Mary Newcomen 11. Agnes Brough 12. Ellen Gilby 13. Christopher Wentworth 14. William Wentworth 15. William Wentworth (the immigrant)

Generations 10-11 are the only ones not connected on Wikitree but many sources including Burke’s LG and the 1562 visitation of Lincolnshire indicate the line from John Gilby and Agnes Brough up through John Sandford of Thorpe Salvain and his wife Elizabeth Greene. Stirnet etc also indicate this lineage. The dates work as well:

Elizabeth Greene b c.1443 Mary Sandford b c.1470 Mary Newcomen b c.1490 Agnes Brough b c.1507 Ellen Gilby b c.1525

Worth a look by a pre-1500 qualified Wikitree contributor imho.

posted by Chris Callais
This line fails at generations 13-14. Agnes Brough was not a daughter of Mary Newcomen. It is an error in the Visitations. I will put more details on the profiles as I get time.
posted by Joe Cochoit
Interesting. Can you give any information around what source(s) identify this as an error? Thanks.

Anyone else notice tht David Kincaid is a direct descendent not only from Edward III but also James IV King of Scotland, according to the info here in WikiTree - Kincaid-18? Easily verified by Relation Finder. Also Robert the Bruce etc.

I was hoping I'm related through the David Gwin>Robert Gwin line, but now I'm not too sure. But it's still pretty cool.

My pending Gateway ancestor, Alexander Falconar, is a direct descendant of Edward III through James IV King of Scotland through his illegitimate daughter, Margaret (Stewart) Drummond.
Edward III is my 22 great grandfather. My gateway ancestor is William Farrar. Surprisingly, all the connections are confident for once!
I think it would be very helpful for all of these to be in a "category." That way we can check if our ancestors are already included with the click of a button.
I have a connection to Edward III, but not a Gateway. I have an information gap at John Lloyd, born March 4, 1768 in Pennsylvania, possibly Philadelphia. He moved to Virginia at age of 3, and died in Porter, NY. The Lloyd family was prominent in Pennsylvania in the Gateway era, including Thomas Lloyd (1641-1694), an early settler in Pennsylvania. Can anyone tell me how to fill the gap? I have no proof of his parentage at all. His daughter’s Bible, which I have, go to great lengths to speak of her father’s life for several pages. But no mention of any info of her grandparents’ identity. It is odd and makes me wonder if there was a family scandal surrounding his birth. Any ideas out there how to fill this gap?
I have a direct relationship to Edward III, he is my 18th great grandfather.

Randolph, in terms of royal genealogy Edward III is interesting in that he is the latest monarch that most people have any chance of connecting to. For example, the number of gateway ancestors to Edward IV is well under a dozen - the project would be very small and uninteresting. If we choose an earlier monarch such as Edward I or Henry I the number of lines of descent expands exponentially - the project would be too large and even harder to manage than it already is.

Edward III represents a sweet spot in royal genealogy of an interesting monarch with a fair number of proven gateway ancestors, but not an unmanageable number.
