Juliette was the daughter of William J. Smith and Sophronia O. (Pratt) Smith, born March 1, 1861, in Amherst, Massachusetts.[1] The 1865 Massachusetts State Census recorded Juliette Smith, age 4, in the Amherst household of William J. Smith, age 42 and a soldier, and Sophronia Smith, age 43, with Harrison J. Smith, 10; Isaac Gibbs, 61, and Lucy J. Gibbs, 64. All were born in Massachusetts.[2] In 1870, the U.S. Census recorded her in her parents' household in Amherst. William J. Smith and Sophrona Smith were both age 48, Harrison J. Smith was 15, and Juliet Smith was 9. William and Harrison both had the occupation "works at leather mill;" Juliet was "at school."[3]
She married Charles Stetson in Leverett, Massachusetts, on 12 January 1877. The marriage record indicates that Charles was age 20, born in Shutesbury, a son of William B. and Kate Stetson, and he lived in Leverett and worked as a teamster. Juliett Smith was recorded as age 18, a daughter of William Smith, born and residing in Amherst. They were married by a clergyman named Taggart.[4] Apparently they settled in the town of Enfield after their marriage. A daughter of Charles and Juliett Stetson, Jennie N. Stetson, was born on 2 March 1878 in Enfield, Massachusetts. [5] Jennie Stetson must have died very young, as she was not recorded in the 1880 census. The 1880 U.S. Census recorded Charles Stetson, 22, a farmer, living in Enfield, Massachusetts, with wife Julia F. Stetson, 19, and three others: Jennie Jones, 14, "helps in home"; David Glazier, 20, and Alonzo Pratt, 40, both boarders with the occupation of laborer. [6]
Her daughter Sophronia was born in 1881, after her husband Charles was murdered.
She, recorded as Mrs. Julia Stetson and Julia (Smith) Stetson, married for a second time on 26 February 1883. Her new husband was Eugene W. Joslin (recorded in Shutesbury as Eugene Joslyn). She was age 22, a daughter of William and Mary Smith, born in Amherst, and residing in Leverett. Eugene was age 19, a son of DW and Elizabeth Joslyn, born and residing in Shutesbury, and a laborer. The marriage was recorded in both Leverett and Shutesbury; it was officiated by Asa F. Clark, pastor of the Congregational church in Leverett.[7]
