Biography

Sophronia O. Pratt was a daughter of Zebina and Lucy Pratt,^[1] born about 1821 in Montague^[2] or Shutesbury,^[1] Massachusetts.

She, recorded as Miss Octava S. Pratt, and Mr. William J. Smith, both of Shutesbury, were married in Shutesbury, Massachusetts, before 1 May 1841. The officiant was Martyn Cushman.^[3]

Children of William and Sophronia (Pratt) Smith were:

1. Olive M. Smith, born 1843.
2. William L. Smith, born about 1848; appears to have died before the 1855 census.
3. Harrison J. Smith, born about 1854.
4. Juliette Smith, born 1 March 1861.^[2]

The 1850 U.S. Census recorded William J. Smith, age 27, a laborer, and Sophronia Smith, 28, in Wilbraham, Massachusetts, with Olive M. Smith, 6, and William L. Smith, 1. All were born in Massachusetts.^[4]

The 1855 Massachusetts State Census recorded Wm. J. Smith and Sophrona O. Smith, both age 33, in North Amherst, Massachusetts, with Olive M. Smith, age 11, and Harrison J. Smith, age 1. Wm. J. Smith was a laborer.^[5]

The 1865 Massachusetts State Census recorded William J. Smith, age 42 and a soldier, and Sophronia Smith, age 43, in Amherst, with Harrison J. Smith, 10; Juliette Smith, 4; Isaac Gibbs, 61; and Lucy J. Gibbs, 64. All were born in Massachusetts.^[6] In 1870, the U.S. Census recorded William J. Smith and Sophrona Smith, both age 48, in Amherst, with Harrison J. Smith, 15, and Juliet Smith, 9. William and Harrison both had the occupation "works at leather mill;" Juliet was "at school."^[7]

Sophronia (Pratt) Smith died from consumption at age 51 in Amherst, Massachusetts, on 3 January 1873.^[1]
