Biography

England Orphan Team
Hal Smith Sr. has completed the England Project's Orphan Trail.
Hal Smith Sr. has German Roots.

Have always been interested in where I “came from.” There was very little discussion in my family about our ancestors. So, after retiring from corporate life, now have time to pursue my interest; It's really my passion. Took a DNA test from Ancestry and have been working at tracing my ancestors since 2018 and enjoy every minute of it. Looking forward to many more years. Have found mistakes in what little history was handed down. I wish I could talk to my ancestors and ask them why they handed down some of the "stories" they did especially the ones that were not quite accurate. My parents are Emma (O'rorke) Smith & Harry F. Smith. My mother's family primarily came from Germany, but an Irishman slipped in there, & my dad's from England/Scotland with a little French.

  • First-hand information. Entered by Hal Smith at registration. Indiana, Marriage Certificates, 1917-2005, Indiana Archives and Records Administration; Indianapolis, IN, USA; Series Number: 89-204; Year: 1991 Apr; Certificate Range: 009500 - 011037;
  • According to DNA research done on the Pickering Genealogy there were 2 families of Pickerings. One from Buck Creek, Penn. the other from Salem MA.

I'm from the Buck Creek Pickerings. They were Quakers & originally from York.

Hi Hal, I wish you a very Merry Christmas and a marvelous New Year.

The Annual US Civil War January Challenge is to connect US Civil War Soldiers for the January Connect-a-Thon. This year will be a twist of what I usually do. Instead of you choosing a "Surname Letter", you will be choosing from a block of soldiers whom I've already screened that show they have family to connect. Each soldier has a connection to one or more of his immediate family--parents, siblings, spouses, children, on their profile. Whether you work on one soldier or your whole block of soldiers, it's one step closer in our goal to connect each of our US Civil War Soldiers. The goal is to make sure all these soldiers are connected at least by one or two degrees. You can sign up now by clicking this link: US Civil War Sign-up Chart

Registration begins soon for the January thon. I will be reminding you when it is time to register, but I have some news that will be helpful when that time comes. I have been told that we will be trying a new registration system. When you go in to register, it will not be just making a comment as in the past. The new system will have sections for each team. You will just find the Legacy Heirs one and post to that one.

Connect-a-Thon Jan 19-22

Connect-a Thon Apr 12-15

Connect-a Thon Jul 19-22

Source-a-Thon Oct 4-7

That means the first Thon of the year will be a Connect-a-Thon on the weekend of the 19 - 22 Jan 2024. I would love to have you with your fellow Legacy Heirs at that time, if it works out for you. I will remind you about registration when that time comes.

P.S. I now know a quick and easy little tip on how to add profiles. If you use the Sourcer/Searcher app, and want to know the hint, let me know and I will send you the steps.

Hi, Darlene or Hi Cuz,

So glad you contacted me. It's great to have contact with relatives who didn't know I had. I've contacted a number of relatives I've discovered, but few have gotten back to me. It appears you are serious genealogist as I am, but I think most get the test add a few names & maybe get bored or don't have the time so they don't work their Tree much. It's very time-consuming as you know. Hopefully, we can exchange some info. Take care, Hal

Hal,

I am hoping that you can help me with understanding my brother's Y-DNA. Last August I raised it to 67 markers when he was listed "end of life." Recently I found that on the Wikitree list of connected relatives it gives Isaac Davis b1671 with wife Patience as our "earliest known paternal ancestor." Nothing else given. I had never heard of Isaac and had believed that the oldest was a James born in Wales ca 1645, Quaker and migrated to Armagh, Ulster, Ireland. He had at least three sons who came to New Castle, Newark, DE with him by 1693. The son Wm. had a son Wm. b 1701 in DE. He married Anne Walker and their children were born in Cecil Co., MD and Orange Co, VA. Their son Wm. married Elizabeth (probably Shelton) and they had five children in Frederick Co., VA, the rest of their family was born in Rowan Co., NC. Their son Wm. married Leah Smith and their oldest son, Joseph b 1800 is my line.

How definite is the name Isaac? Going back from Isaac they do have Wm's.

Thank you for any help you can give me. Sue Davis 82334

Hi Hal,

It's that time of the year again: check-in time! As England Project Leaders, we like to check in with you every six months or so to see how things are progressing. Back in May, we didn't ask for a response due to the rapid emergence of Covid-19 because we understood that people's lives were changing rapidly. While we are still living in a Covid world, we do need to hear back from you this time around

First of all, how are you doing? What are you currently working on? Are you happy with the team(s) you're in, or would you like to change things up?

Secondly, we're looking for some feedback on the Google Group and our Discord server. Do you use either or both of these? If you don't use either, why not? Do you have any suggestions on how we can improve participation and collaboration, either generally or for you personally?

Looking forward to hearing from you,

Hi Hal,

I see that you added parents to Joseph Large-24, despite that the bio says the father for sure is incorrect, and his wife's name was unknown. Are there sources you can add to support his parentage? Thank you.

Hi Hal,

I've noticed all the profiles you've been creating for the Helms family and wanted to say thank you. I haven't found any connection to my maternal Helms twig but I'm still enjoying seeing them all be created.

I noticed that you are sourcing but those sources aren't showing up on the profiles. That is being caused by using the <ref> codes below the <references /> code. When you put a source down there, you don't need to include the <ref> and </ref> codes. They are only used when you use the footnote style of source in a biography about the Sources heading. You can see examples of both kinds in the biography for my baby brother; it's an open privacy profile, so feel free to edit and look at how I did things.

Please let me know if you have any questions,

Hi Joan,

Sorry, but first part of year was extremely busy for me. However, got back to it in April. Added almost 200 names. But also, have started to review some of the early fam. mem. I added and making corrections. That has taken me to Yorkshire. I still want to be a part of the Yorkshire Team. I have many relatives that came from there and just doing fam. research will hopefully eliminate some orphan files. I’m working on abt. 25 orphan files that have the last name of some of my family. Had to change my plans to visit Yorkshire until next year or whenever it is safe to travel. Thanks for your patience and stay safe. Hal
