Joseph Hewetson was born in 1842 and lived his short life at St. Clairsville in Belmont County, Ohio. His father, Joseph Hewetson (1804-), was a physician. ^[1]According to the 1860 Census, Joseph was a printer by trade.^[2]

On the Find-a-Grave Memorial page is an account of the death and burial of Cpl Joseph Hewetson, Co. E 15th Ohio Vol Infantry. It is written by his brother, 2nd Lt. Walter Heweston of the same unit, who was with him at death and saw to his burial. The exact location of the grave is detailed, but by the time Union dead were removed to the military cemetery at Shiloh(in 1866), often it was impossible to know whose remains were being reinterred.
