David Smith was born on Martha's Vineyard in 1756-7, as calculated from the age ("62nd year") given in his 1818 death record; two of his children's death records place his birth at Tisbury, one at Edgartown. Charles Edward Banks, in his "History of Martha's Vineyard", notes that Smith became a "master mariner", and that his residence was in Tisbury.
David Smith served in the American Revolution, providing "sea coast defence," under Cap Benj Smith.[1]
Banks adds these notes concerning Capt. Smith's marriages, and his children by two wives:
"He m. (1) Sarah Skiff (146) 28 Jan. 1778, who was b. 13 Mch. 1761 and d. 31 July 1787; m. (2) Maria Allen (185) 13 Nov. 1788, who was b.1758 and d. 1 Mch. 1820. He d. 1 Oct. 1818. They had the following named children:
190. Sarah, b. 9 May 1778; m. Beriah Weeks (136) 26 Dec. 1802.
191. David, b. 27 July 1781; m. Charlotte Dunham (421) 25 Dec. 1806.
192. Nathan, b. 16 Aug. 1783; m. Polly J. Dunham (422) Dec. 1808.
193. Thomas Harlock, b. 4 Aug. 1786; m. Deborah West (275) 20 Dec. 1810.
