Biography
Clarence Elmer Simon was the youngest son of William Seymour and Mary Emswiler Simon and was born 17 Jul 1888 at (Spring Vallley) Spencerville Ohio. He attended schools at Spring Valley and Anderson, Indiana. In 1897 he came to the Maddock, ND community and on 17 Oct 1909 married Amelia Hitsman. They lived in Maddock until 1917 when they moved to Montana, living there until 1922 when they returned to ND. They lived in Devils Lake, ND in 1936. He passed away in 1977. Survivors include his widow, three sons (Harley, Everett and Clifford), a daughter (Irene). He was preceded in death by his parents, six brothers, five sisters, two stepsons (Leslie and Lloyd Hitsman). [1]

I also remember him scolding us boys at the dinner table for slurping or making too many noises.
As a young boy I thought he was mean but not as mean as his wife. There were several afternoons I would come home from school and see he had a bruise on his face or arms. My mom (Violet) later told me that Granpa had been hit by Granma. She was developing dementia and often they had arguments and fights about being so far from their N Dakota home. I never saw a bruise on her so Granpa must have taken all of the abuse and never gave any back. Over time I saw how he cared for Granma and I eventually learned a little about what love is because of his bruises.
Later, they moved back to N Dakota under the care of their other two sons and daughter in a senior living facility. Gramma's dementia kept getting worse but the separation from Gramma seemed to be good for Grampa Clarence. He had less bruising and even started attending church services (in his facility?). Last time I saw him was before my high school graduation in May 1977. He seemed happy. I'm so glad I got to see him then.
