William Seymour Simon was born 18 Feb 1847 at Milam, Hardy County, West Virginia. His wife Mary Elizabeth Simon was born 5 December 1847 in the same county. They were married in Hardy, Bedford County, Virginia on 27 June 1865.

They migrated starting about 1883 through Ohio and Indiana heading for Williston, Dakota Territory (became North Dakota in 1889). His older children were born in W Virginia from 1867-1883 and the remainder were born in Allen County, Ohio. The family then moved through Indiana and a few of them married in Anderson, Madison County, Indiana. The family as a whole then moved on to N Dakota, travelling to Sheyenne, N Dakota by rail. From there they took a horse and wagon to Oberon, N Dakota, arriving in 1897. William and Mary homesteaded 4 ½ miles southwest of Flora and a few of their children homesteaded near them.

To William and Mary were born fourteen children; John George Franklin, Phillip Seymour, Jacob Benjamin, Joseph Samuel, Sarah Annie, Catherine Elizabeth, David William, Hester Mary Susan, Lily May, Clarence Elmer, Cora Elda Priscilla, J. Ira Marcellus, and two children that died during infancy (Frank John George and Stephen Mcvay).

William and Mary were members of the Dunkard Church in Flora. William Seymour Simon died of a foot infection on 25 Jan 1914 at his daughter Hester’s home in Oberon, Benson County. Mary passed away 6 May 1918 in New Rockford, Eddy County, North Dakota due to paralytic stroke. She passed at the home of her daughter, Catherine Elizabeth (Simon) Koon. Both William and Mary are buried in Oberon, Benson County, North Dakota.

I have a four foot cherry stick (cane) that I was told originally belonged to my great-grandfather, William Seymour. I was told he used it later in life and that makes sense as his bio above states he had a foot infection that eventually caused his death.

He must have been a tall man over 6 ft tall as I am 6'7" and the walking stick feel perfect in my hand.
