Biography

Frank (Schottelius) Raebel VDC has German Roots.

Frank Raebel Schottelius was born on 23rd May 1883 at Black Rock, South Australia, Australia. He was a son of Otto Schottelius and Mary Raebel.[1] He later changed his name to the more-Anglicised, Raebel.

He married Ellen Cook on 5th August 1914 in St John's Church of England (now Anglican Church), Fremantle, Western Australia.[2]

Frank (Schottelius) Raebel VDC is a Military Veteran.
Served in the Australian Army Volunteer Defence Corps 1942-?
4th Battalion (WA)

Frank seemed to have abandoned his German heritage as WW1 got close. He had already migrated from Adelaide to Perth. He met Elizabeth (Cook) Raebel in Fremantle and was very upset that his surname change was delayed until after War was declared in 1915. He was a hard man, probably typical of his time. As a landholding farmer he was well regarded in the Harvey/Brunswick Junction area. In the paper (Trove Australia) he is often mentioned in the 1920's/30's for the Farmers Progress Association, his fine rifle shooting and Raebels Road Benger WA. With his two older sons already serving in Australia's defence in the Second World War and the third shortly to enlist (despite being held back by his Father as an essential farm worker), Frank while still running his dairy farm, enlisted in the Australian Army Volunteer Defence Corps on 22nd May 1942. He was posted to the 4th Battalion (WA).[3]

Frank passed away, aged 87 years, on 11th July 1970 at Perth, Western Australia.[4]

Grandpa (I only met once) was a fine shot and I was given a couple of teaspoons - won as prizes in the weekly shoots, I expect he was Mounted Infantry, in the Volunteer Defence Corps. He has a hand casting mould for .30 Winchester bullets and set me to making bullets to keep out of everyone's hair. Grandma was blind when I met them, so Grandpa had his life cut-out
