Do you want to remain working with this project? Note that it is a requirement to respond to the Military and War Project Check-ins. Please respond to this message by clicking the reply button below this message, to post your answer. I look forward to hearing from you..

Many thanks,

Hi, thanks for the annual check-in, a good opportunity. I don't know how many profiles I put up this year but I completed my first personal task. I put up about 1000 airmen of all nationalities who served with 455 Squadron RAAF in the UK during WW2.

I love looking at their profiles, some coming from tiny little places and rising to becoming ranking officers in the Air Force (not exclusively Australian).

My gratitude to Ken Cook and Yourself for shepherding me along. (What's lacking in quality, I hope is that I am creating basic profiles that help the next person. Best Wishes, Geoff Raebel-2

Mercy Geoffrey that is a lot of work. I am so proud for you. I peeked at your contributions and think I saw some. I am marking you active.

I didn't see any stickers or any categories, that would pull them together. Or you at least make a Space page, and list them on the space page so they would be there at your fingertips.

This is what I did for the men who were KIA at the Alamo in Texas. You do know about the Alamo? https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Defenders_in_the_Battle_of_the_Alamo

Hi Geoffrey,

We're contacting you for the annual Australia Project membership checkin. We really appreciate your involvement in the Project in the last year. Thank you so much for all your help to improve Australian profiles on WikiTree.

Please could you reply to this message, or send me a private message to let us know if you'd like to stay on in the Project, and if you'd like to make any changes to the teams that you belong to. The teams are listed on Australia Project Teams.

If you've moved on to other things for the moment, that's absolutely fine. We'd appreciate if you'd let us know so that we can remove you from the membership list.

Over the past year, Australia Project members have been more active on Discord. We're finding it a fun way to communicate as a project. If you're not on Discord yet, here's some information - Help:Discord. If you are already on the WikiTree Discord server, let us know, and we can send you an invite link to the dedicated Australia Project server (WikiAustralia) where all our chat channels are located. It's a great way to communicate with other members on your project team/s, or for any general questions.

We're always happy to receive any ideas or suggestions that you have to make our project even better.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

The Australia Project Leadership Team ~ Gillian, Margaret and Veronica

Hi Geoffrey,

It's time for the annual Australia Project membership checkin. Thank you so much for contributing to the project and Australian profiles on WikiTree during the last year. We really appreciate you!

If you would like to stay in the project, please reply to this message or send me a private message to let us know that you would like to stay on. Alternatively, if your WikiTree and research interests have moved away from Australia, please let us know and we can remove you from the membership list for the moment. You will, of course, be very welcome to rejoin the project down the track whenever you want to.

We are also keen to know if you want to make any changes to the team or teams that you want to focus on. Take a look on Australia Project Teams to see what teams there are to choose from. If you want to discuss this, or have any questions or suggestions about the Australia Project we'd love to hear your ideas.

Thanks for taking the time to get back to us!

Gillian, co-Leader, Australia Project

Thanks Gillian, I'm pretty poor technically with Wiki. I am just throwing up a lot of young Australian men who never got to grow up. I hope it opens llinks for others to connect to. My special pleasure is finding a surname not previously in Wiki - had a few lately

Best Wishes to all Project Members - Geoff. PS I'm a bit shy and unsure with stickers I have a history due out from Pen & Sword UK - end January - deals with the Australian (RAAF) Deployment to Soviet Russia in 1942 - an unlikely story, I know.

Hi Geoffrey, that all sounds great. Thanks so much for that, and for getting back to me. Stickers aren't my forte either :-) If the profiles you're creating are for people in the military, feel free to add the Australia, Profile Improvement - Military category, so those profiles are easy to find for anyone who wants to follow up your work.

Hi Geoffrey,

Congratulations on certifying to work on pre-1700 profiles!

It’s very important to read and understand the Help:Pre-1700 Profiles page. These profiles for deep ancestors are shared by many, and collaborating on them works best if we all follow the guidelines laid out on that page.

Primary sources should always be added to pre-1700 profiles at the time they are created. If you don't have a source for a pre-1700 profile, it would be best to ask for help in the G2G forum before creating the profile.

Thanks again, and good luck with your research.

Hello again,

I sent you a check-in message a week ago about the Military and War Project to ask you about your continued involvement but have not yet heard back from you. Do you still want to be in the project? If I don’t hear from you by the same time next week I’ll assume that you’ve moved on to other things but you’re most welcome to re-join the project at any time.

Best wishes,

Mary~ Project Coordinator, Military and War Project

Mary, Thanks, I'm not clever with my Wiki-ing. I try to add a 100+ Veterans a month. Four or five of these add to a bigger profile - I look on them as seeds for others from reliable sites.

Privately I have a book which will go to press momentarily after the Queen says "You can go back to work now."

It is the story of the of the Australian and British Air Forces Deployment to Soviet Russia in 1942. The allies worried about collapse of Russia at Stalingrad. The airborne component flew across only losing a 1/4 of their aircraft. The ground crews travled aboard the USS Tuscaloosa on her first wartime patrol. So yes I'm in "Sink the Tirpitz"

Thanks for replying to the Military and War Check in, Geoffrey. I am marking you ACTIVE. The numbers of veterans you add will increase and bring to the attention of others more veterans. Congratulations on the publication of the book.

Margaret, I'm happy to stay with the Australia Project. Time is pressing at the moment, I'm literally on the last edit of a History for pen & sword UK. Hope to get it out of my hair this week.

I put up a lot of young men killed in WW2/ mainly Air Force as a way to record - they are not good profiles but all the info is there for someone else My best so far is an aunt Haynes-2888 - a lot of secrets in the family that accidentally spilled out THANKS FOR ALL YOU DO!

Hi Geoff, it is a pleasure to help in any way I can, I will continue to add whatever information I find as I make my way through the "Australian Haynes" lineage. If there is anything specific you need help with don't hesitate to give me a shout, I am always happy to help, and that's for anything, not just Haynes, I love digging around!!

Have a great day.

May I ask where you located the pic of Nile and Joannie? Cool and wet here in Sydney today, what city are you in?

In four trips to UK I have skirted close to Huntingdon but never actually been there.

I write a quarterly 8 page Newsletter for Australians who had family in RAF Bomber Command. If it sounds of interest, I'd be happy to put you on my Complimentary list. Regards G

Hi Geoff, the picture came from the Ancestry page of someone who I thought you might be connected to and that you had just not had time to post the pictures, her name is Merena Raebel, and her tree is quite spectacular, is she a relative of yours?

I live in the US now, just outside Myrtle Beach, South Carolina but I am originally from Sheffield, I have been around the Huntingdon area but never visited the locations of our Haynes ancestors, it was always something I was going to do, and then I ended up marrying an American lady, moving over here and it's not "just down the road", anymore!!

I would love to be on the list, I have a lot of military history to catch up with, I have a Roadblock of my own on the Dowde side of the family, that's my mum's line and her ancestors were military people, my 2nd great grandfather died in the Crimean war, his father is where the line stops, it's only been a 20-year block so nothing major!!!!!!

Merena is my niece. She has some problem with me (since she was 8) I think something about sharing her father, my brother. She is a very driven girl, I can believe she would have quite a site. Nelson her father was drowned in a flood about 4 years ago. Can I get your address via [email address removed] G

G'day from OZ - no particular request, jut staying in touch and hope all is well with you. Winter has finally hit Sydney, it is a cold 12 deg C outside. My son's wife is expecting her 5th child. after 4 boys in close succession, I thought they had it figured out; due in about 6 months. Being the only Raebel family in Australia, young Shaun has probably saved the name from oblivion.

It is surprising how Nile's 2nd wife Ivy connects so far back into English heritage and even to my flying hero Bert Hinkler.

Best Wishes - Geoff

Hi Geoff from sunny South Carolina! It is very much still summer here, we are still creeping into the 100f heat index, and no change in sight, I am ready for the cool down to happen. probably starting in October!! Sounds like in a few generations the Raebel name will be back on the map and flourishing, thanks to your son!

I am currently working on some more connections who moved to Australia, this is the Ruff side of the Haynes line, one of whom, was a silent movie star of sorts, he was a Ruff but adopted is uncle Manning Haynes's name for his stage name. This is all very much work in progress though, it looks like Adelaide is going to be the main starting point, a lot of research lies ahead I think...

Thanks for the update and stay warm!

Regards, Chris.

Hi Geoffrey,

The Australia Project leadership team are carrying out a check-in to see how you are going in the project and especially to thank you for all your work on Australian profiles on WikiTree. We really value your participation.

Please could you get back to me by private message to let me know if you are happy with your current role and team involvement within the project or if you would like to do something additional or different. Currently you are on the Prussian Settlement team. If you would like a change, you can check on the Australia Project page to see what other options there are.

It would also be great to hear any feedback and any suggestions that you have to improve the project. On a practical note, if you are a member of the google group, are you receiving messages ok? Also do you have Australia as one of the tags you are following on the G2G? Don't forget to add it in if you don't have that tag yet.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Deb, I write a quarterly newsletter for families that had a relative in WW2 RAF Bomber Command, mostly UK, Canada, Aust & NZ. With 55,000 boys lost, I trip over a lot of forgotten Uncles. Mail me at [email address removed] if you would like a copy and if you like it I can add you to the mailing list.

Yes, I am active and putting up a few every month. G

Thanks Steve, I suspect the translation of the German a-umlaut has caused a lot of odd translations from German into English

I've seen/experienced Rabel with/without umlaut, Rachel, Raybel - it must make tracing German relatives difficult

posted by Geoffrey Raebel
Cheers Geoff, it wasn't only the umlauts that would have caused confusion.

1) Most immigrants would have given their name to a clerk who wrote the ship manifest. Quite an easy process if you are native born English speaker and can explain that 'Stephen' is spelt 'ph' not 'v'. Not so easy if you aren't English speaking and the clerk is trying to transcribe your speech born in a different language 2) To fit in, many non-British immigrants used English variations of their baptism names. Heinrich/Henry was familiar to me. Other common ones are Elisabet/Elizabeth, Georg/George. 3) Many people used the forename they like most. From what I've seen it was common practice to used the second forename. 4) Finally, some name changes reflect a decision to distance themselves from the family history. Very small minority of the profiles I know, but it does happen.

I'm pretty sure that most of the Raebel variations come from the first point - limited familiarity and comprehension of German language.

Hi Gefffrey. I've only found birth registrations for 2 daughters and one son for Lucy Menz (Raebel-38).

Two of my family retired to Saddleworth. Bridget Parker (O'Connor-2993) and Jack Jones (Jones-60695).

Thanks for your help. Henry Raebel is my next Enigma

You do collect interesting family stories. I've just added possible birth registration for Heinrich/Henry in 1858. If you agree this is the same profile I created for Raebel-39, then Raebel-44 and Raebel -39 should be merged.

More pleasant history. I believe Cyril Box flew Lancasters. His daughter, Joan, married one of my uncles, the late Rex Thomas in Corrigin.

p.s. added 14th Sept. I worry about privacy and generally I avoid adding adding to profiles after 1900. In this case I'll extend my family tree inside Wikitree.

Hi Geoffrey, Thanks for adding so much information to the profile of Trevor Jones. I had started with information supplied by his niece. I am confident that your sources are more accurate and changed the year of his death.

Hi Geoffrey,

I am currently doing check-ins for the Australia project, and noticed that you have been contributing to the Prussian Settlement project, but are not a member of the Australia Project. Are you still interested in working on Prussian Settlement? If so, I'll join you up to the Australia Project as well. Thanks for all your wonderful work on WikiTree for Australia.

Hi Geoffrey, I've changed the marriages of Carl Schottelius's daughters to realign with details recorded in civil registrations. Please advise if you think I've made any errors.

You previously wrote a question about the marriage of John Richard Glover. The birth registrations of John Glover's children show the mother as Louisa Augusta Julia Schottelius.

Amanda Schottelius and John Tunbridge had a son born 1875 in Manoora, South Australia, 19 years before my grandfather Arthur Jones was born there. Regards, Steve.

I suspect my grandfather cut ties to the South Australian family by 1910 - migrating to WA. While I am related, I only have a 1985 family history to guide me.
