Biography

Harriet Mary Rushworth was born on 26 January 1829 and was baptised on 28 April 1829 in the Chapel of His Majesty's Chelsea Royal Hospital, Kensington and Chelsea. She was the daughter of Charles Powlett Rushworth and Mary Elizabeth Home.

Her mother Mary died on 23 May 1841.

In the 1841 England Census, Harriet Rushworth (aged 14) was recorded living with her widowed father Charles Powlett Rushworth (50) and her siblings Jane Rushworth (24), Edward Rushworth (20), Home Rushworth (20), Catherine Rushworth (20), Horatia Ann Rushworth (15), Rosermond Rushworth (10) and Frederica Rushworth (4) at Queen Anne Street, St. Marylebone, Middlesex. Also in the household were six household staff.

In the 1851 England Census, Harriet M Rushworth (aged 24) was recorded in the household of her aunt Harriet C Home (53) at No. 2 York Terrace, Sidmouth, Devon. Also in the household were her two sisters Rosamand Rushworth (aged 20) and Frederica Rushworth (14 and a Scholar), as well as two servants.

Her father Charles died on 15 October 1854.

Harriet married Reverend Edward Slater Browne on 13 January 1859[1].

Norfolk Chronicle 22 January 1859, page 7:
On the 13th, at St. Stephen's, Hammersmith, the Rev. Edward Slater Browne, M.A., late incumbent of Purbrook, Hants, to Harriet Mary, daughter of the late Charles Powlett Rushworth, Esq.[2]

They had one daughter, who died relatively young.

In the England Census of 1861, Harriet M S Browne (aged 34) was recorded living with her husband Richard E S Browne (30 and Curate of Warminster) at East Street, Warminster, Wiltshire.

By 1891, Harriet M Slater Browne (aged 63) was recorded living with her husband Edward Slater Browne (60 and Living on Own Means) at Cholderton House, West Cholderton, Amesbury, Wiltshire. Also in the household were five servants.

Her husband died in 1897, accidentally drowned in a well.

Harriet then moved to Sherborne St John, Hampshire, England.

She was resident at Springfield, Sherborne St. John, Hants when she passed away on 18 January 1914[3].

Hampshire Advertiser 24 January 1914, page 6:
SLATER-BROWNE.—On the 18th Inst., at Sherborne St. John, Harriet Mary Slater-Browne, widow of Canon Slater-Browne, of Cholderton, near Salisbury, in her 87th year.[4]

Her Will was granted at London on 5 March 1914 to her nephew Sir Charles Rushworth Watson, Bart., the surviving Executor[5]. Value of Estate: £21,854 3s.7d.
