Obituary

OBITUARY: Peter R. Reitz died very suddenly at his home near Ohl post office, in Beaver Township, about 3 o'clock in the morning of Tuesday, May 1, 1900, of the second attack of paralysis. His wife was awakened by his heavy breathing and his arm falling on her in a helpless way, and getting up found him dying. She hurriedly called the family, but he was dead when they reached his side.

Deceased was born August 1836, and in 1857 was married to Catherine Brosius. To them were born thirteen children, eleven of whom are living, as follows: Cornelius of Heathville: Mrs Levi Plyler and Mrs Frank Plyler of Brookville; Frank, Hiram and Emanuel, of Ohl; John of Brookville; Alice, Emma and Rebecca still at home. Mr Reitz served one year in the 57th PA Vols during the Civil War, in Company F, and his friends think this service had an effect in shortening his life. He was a good citizen and neighbor, an affectionate considerate husband, a kind father and a faithful member of the Lutheran church from his youth. He will be greatly missed in the church as well as in his home. again we are reminded that:

There is no fireside howsoe'er defended, But has one vacant chair! The air is full of farewells to the dying, And mournings for the dead.  Let us be patient! these severe afflictions Not from the ground arise, But often times celestial benedictions Assume this dark disguise,  We will be patient, and assuage the feeling We may not wholly stay; By silence sanctifying, not concealing The grief that must have way.

The funeral was on Thursday morning, May 3rd, the services being conducted by his pastor, Rev. J.L. Fischer. A brief service was held at the home, but the regular funeral service was in the church, after which the body was laid to rest in the Burkhouse Cemetery, amid a large concourse of relatives and friends, who had assembled to pay this last tribute of respect to his memory.
