Biography

Phillip Joseph Reitz was born on 14 Oct 1894 in Syracuse, Onondaga, New York.[1] He was the son of John Rizzo and Rosa, whose surname is currently unknown.

Phillip's father immigrated to the United States from Italy in the late 1880s. The family's surname in Italy was "Rizzo", but changed to "Reitz" when the Rizzo family settled in the United States.

When he was still a young child, Phillips parents moved to the city of Oswego, Oswego, New York, where his mother passed away in 1899. Phillip and his siblings were placed in care at Saint Francis Home, an orphanage in Oswego, New York, until his father was able to get things straightened around.

Phillip would live in the in the city of Oswego for most of his life. He never married or had any children.

Phillip registered for the WWI draft on 5 Jun 1918. At the time of his registration, he was living with his sister, Rose (Reitz) Demore, and her husband, at 63 Liberty Street in Oswego, New York. He worked for the New York Central Railroad, operating the erect machine.[2]

Phillip served in the Army during World War I.

Phillip lived a very active life. He was a member of St. Paul's Church, The Holy Name Society, The American Legion. He managed the St. Paul Bowling Alley for nearly 25 years, he played softball, and he played baseball for the Italian American Citizen's baseball team.[3]

Phillip moved to the Welland Hotel in Syracuse about two years before he passed away.[3]

Phillip passed away on 25 Oct 1969 at the VA Hospital in Syracuse, Onondaga, New York.[1][3] He was buried at Saint Peter's Cemetery in Oswego, Oswego, New York.[4]

Census Enumerations

1900 Oswego, Oswego, New York Phillip (age 6) was an inmate at Saint Francis Home. His siblings, Anna, James, Martin and Anna, also lived in the orphanage with him. Their father, John, has not yet been located this census year.[5]
1905 Oswego, Oswego, New York Phillip (age 10) lived in his father's household at 229 Liberty Street. He was attending school at this point in time.[6]
1930 Oswego, Oswego, New York Phillip (age 35) was staying in his sister's, Rose (Reitz) Demore's home at 63 Liberty Street. Phillip and Roses' father, John Demore was also staying with Rose, her husband and children at this time. Phillip was working as a machinist for the New York Central Railroad.[7]
