Biography

Martin Reitz was born on 23 Sep 1891 in Syracuse, Onondaga, New York.[1][2] He was the son of John Reitz and Rosa, whose surname is currently unknown.

Martin's father immigrated to the United States from Italy in the late 1880s. The family's surname in Italy was "Rizzo", but changed to "Reitz" when the Rizzo family settled in the United States.

Martin initially lived in Syracuse, Onondaga, New York, but moved with his parents to Oswego, Oswego, New York around the turn of the century. When his mother passed away in 1899, Martin and his siblings were placed in St. Francis Home (a Catholic orphanage in Oswego) until his father was able to get things straightened around.

By June 1918, Martin was living in Syracuse, New York and working as a cook in a dinner at the corner of Clinton and Onondaga Streets.[3]

Martin joined the Citizens Defense Corp at Syracuse. He was inducted into service on 9 Sep 1918. He performed his service at Fort Hamilton until he was honorably discharged on 8 Dec 1918, with the rank of Private.[1][4]

Martin married Concetta Furco on 17 Jun 1922 in Syracuse, Onondaga, New York.

Martin passed away on 10 Jan 1969 in Syracuse, Onondaga, New York.[1]

Research Notes

One of the key pieces of documentation that connects Martin to this family is his military records. When Martin registered for the WWII draft, he indicated that his sister, Rose Demore of 63 Liberty Street, would always know how to get ahold of him.[7] It is an error that Rose's address was entered as being in the city of Syracuse. Rose and her husband had lived at 63 Liberty Street, Oswego, New York for years by this point in time. Martin joined the Citizens Defense Corps. His military records show Rose's correct address: 63 Liberty Street, Oswego, New York because this is the address that Martin initially claimed as his own.[4]
