Hans was born about 1668.[1][i] The location of his birth is in dispute.[ii] He is the only known child of Jean Valentine Ranc and an unknown mother. He was a member of the reformed church in Germany.
On 11 February 1698, when he was about thirty years old, Hans married Margaretha Phillips/Philippes in Neckarau, Mannheim, Baden,[2] and she bore him known children, sons, daughters:
In 1710, when he was in his early forties, Hans died of unknown causes in Neckarau.[1] His father was the head of house for only 2 years when he too died. His daughter Rosine Katherine died in 1712 at age 7 and Johann Vallentine also died in 1712 at age 2. The other children were left to be raised by their mother.[9]
i. Hans' birth year can be deduced from his age on his death record.
ii. J. Allen Ranck's "The Ranks of the Rancks," says that Jean fled France with his family to Germany.[10] This would imply that Hans was born in France. However, the research of John P. Ranck suggests that the entire history of Jean coming from France might be wrong.[9]
NOTE: There is a known Gustave Anjou (known fraudster) genealogy that exists for Hans Ranck. We know, through source documents that Hans Ranck exists but the Anjou genealogy casts doubt on much of the early history of Hans, notably that he originates from France and that he was a Huguenot refugee.[9]
