Lorraine here saying "Leland, you have a lot of badges. You have been using WikiTree a lot?!"
posted by Lorraine Frantz
Not really. I have really done only two things. I added a bunch of my closest relatives, and I participated in one of WikiTree's weeklong challenges. I participated in the Elon Musk challenge. You may recall I sent you some information I gleaned from that challenge. After I created so many person profiles I got a badge. When you get enough badges, you are "trusted" and able to do a few extra things. You can join a WikiTree group, like the New Netherlands group, and get New Netherlands badge, etc. It is a lot like the Boy Scout badge system! One thing that I started to do was to record the WikiTree ID into the corresponding ancestry.com record for that person. This allows me to go back and forth. Also, a very good feature of WikiTree is that you can copy and paste a wikitree person URL (https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Showalter-1283 ) directly into your browser without being logged in. You only need to be logged in to make edits and take full advantage of everything.

Hello Leland Vandiver.

I am on Ancestry.com and we are 3rd cousins, Once removed. It is on my dad's side of the family as related to the Hume family.

Hi,

I have been doing DNA research and I normally hang out on ancestry.com. I just noticed your message. I have recently started working on Wikitree and despite its cumbersome aspects, I am trying to be cooperative. My biggest problem is when someone becomes a profile manager and then disappears. I know who is connected to who, but if I have to wait for an inactive profile manager...nothing happens. Maybe you know the solution.

In any case, I would be happy to work with you on the Hume family. Do you have a "home" or a document for the Hume family? My email is [email address removed] In case Wikitree hides my email address, I am itplanning AT coastside DOT net.

Merry Christmas! Leland Vandiver

Hello again Leland,

Congratulations on certifying to work on pre-1700 profiles! It’s very important to read and understand the Help:Pre-1700 Profiles page. These profiles for deep ancestors are shared by many, and collaborating on them works best if we all follow the guidelines in the certification quiz.

Primary sources should always be added to pre-1700 profiles at the time they are created. If you don't have a source for a pre-1700 profile, it would be best to ask for help in the G2G forum before creating the profile.

Welcome to Wikitree Leland,

We are so happy you decided to upgrade to the Family Member level.

Please visit our tutorial pages to learn how to use WikiTree: How To Use WikiTree. They will save you time, energy, and frustration as you add your family profiles.

Exploring the site is the best way to learn. One way to do that is to check out the drop-down menus on the top right side of your profile page. Finding a known ancestor and collaborating with the profile manager is another great way to start.

Questions? You can always use the G2G link in the Help Menu to find answers.
