Gustave Anjou (WikiTree profile Jungberg-7) was a noted purveyor of genealogical fraud. In her book Family Trees (Harvard University Press, 2013), Francoise Weil characterizes him as a "charlatan operating on a relatively large scale," selling fabricated genealogies to Americans over three decades and advertising complete genealogies for a $250 fee. Wikipedia has an excellent writeup describing his exploits as does Geni.

The result of his exploits was a number of impressive but untrustworthy genealogies, with a mixture of accurately documented facts and errors, which those who have followed him have had to weed out, piece by piece and item by item.
