Welcome to the Russian Roots Project!

Project Mission

The mission of the Russian Roots Project is to develop profiles on WikiTree for those who lived in Russia or have Russian ancestry; to facilitate collaboration among our members with Russian interests; to create a regional project that will help WikiTree attract members from other countries; to highlight the diversity of the Russian culture and people.

To ensure that project members have a basic understanding of how Wikitree works we ask that all applicants have at least 100 contributions.

Project Goals

1. Add Russia-related profiles, checking for existing profiles to avoid duplication. If any duplicate profiles exist, request merges, starting with the oldest generation.
2. If profiles were loaded by GEDCOM, use WikiTree Styles and Standards to clean up residue and broken links.
3. Search out original rather than derivative documentation and add sources.
4. Write comprehensive, well-sourced biographies.
5. Add the Russian Roots template to the profiles along with any relevant categories.
6. Contact SJ Baty to request PPP status for those profiles that meet the criteria for project protection. This will protect them from an incorrect merge.
7. Make sure profiles of all family members are correct and documented.
8. Profiles need to be linked to the greater WikiTree. Try to find the connection.
9. Work on sources for Russia, Unsourced Profiles
10. Work with the Global Cemeteries Project to ensure cemeteries in Russia are added to WikiTree.

To-Do List

1. Identify profiles and tag them with appropriate categories
2. Spread the word to others with Russian heritage or interest in the area
3. Establish a project badge and a sticker for profiles that do not warrant the project template
4. Collect resource/links/recommendations for a help-page or Library
5. Identify people who can help with documents or direct research
6. Add Russian Notables sticker to applicable profiles.

• To add a profile to the project, you can add {{Russian Roots}} which gives you this:

  For profiles with Russian roots or Russian history but that do not rate the project box a sticker template can be used.

  • To add the profile to a specific city/town/area in Russia, please add it to the proper geographic category (see the list here) - if it does not exist, please contact Steven Harris or Summer O to create it. (These are currently in the process of being created).
