Jessie B Pickel was born on 24 Jul 1888 in Carpentersville, Indiana, USA as the daughter of George W Pickel (1860-1930) and Matilda Louise (Anderson) Pickel (abt.1861-abt.1927).[1]
In 1900, Jessie (10), and her parents, lumberman George (39) and Matilda (38), and two siblings, Nellie Pickel (15), Alma Clay (Pickel) Leyenberger (abt.1887-abt.1966) (12), were living in a rented home in Monroe, Putnam, Indiana.[2]
She was known to have completed 3 years of high school, but quit before graduating.[3]
Jessie B (19) and Wilfred or Wilford or William Earnest or Ernest Lane (1885-1946) (23) (b10 Mar 1885), who were both residing in Bainbridge, Indiana, married on 11 May 1908 in Indiana. His parents were Edward Morton Lane and Ella (?) Lane Lane.[1] (I believe her full birth name was Tabitha Ellen Lane (born Jun 1862 in Floyd, Putnam, IN ... father, James H Lane (1837-1916); mother Lucy N Pickett. (1841-1922).
Jessie then seems to be "missing" for the next 35 years. Nothing is known about these years.
In 1940, Jessie (50) and Ernest (54) are empty nesters, living in Indianapolis, Marion, Indiana, where they had been living on a farm since at least 1935. Ernest, who had an 8th grade education, was now working as a barber.[3]
Interesting to note: On 27 Apr 1942, Wilford "Earnest" Lane registered for the WWII Draft, naming his daughter, Mrs. Alma Lernberger of Bainbridge, IN, as his next of kin. No mention of a wife. Where was she in 1942 and why is she not found on a 1950 US Census? Could she have been in poor health or have died prior to 1942? Is year of death engraved on her gravestone an erroneous year?
She is thought to have died in 1956; however her death record has not been found. Her gravestone, engraved with both her and her husband's names and dates, can be seen at Bainbridge Cemetery in Bainbridge, Putnam, Indiana. Needs death record[4]
1950 US Census has yet to be found. Could she be living in another household?
DEATH: 1956 Death Year is in question.
