Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Mary (Patton) Thompson was a Virginia colonist.

Birth: Mary Patton was born about 1728 to Col. James Lynn Patton and Mary Borden Osborne Patton.

Marriage: In 1748 or 1749, Mary Patton married William J. Thompson.[1]

Acquisition of Burke's Garden: Upon the death of Mary's father Col. James Patton, his Estate was equally divided between Margaret (Patton) Buchanan, her sister and Mary (Patton) Thompson. The splendid Burke's Garden lands passed to Mary and after her death to her son Capt. James Patton Thompson. [2] Col. William Preston's journal records: "Burke's Garden is a tract of land of 5,000 or 6,000 acres as rich and fertile as any I ever saw, as well watered with many beautiful streams and is surrounded by mountains almost impassable."[2] Mary and her son James Thompson later acquired equitable title to a portion of an additional 400 acres (known as the best land in Burke's Garden) from William Ingles. [2] This equitable title allowed her grandson Capt. James Patton Thompson to obtain a judicial decree requiring conveyance of legal title to one third of the 400 acres to include in "one square" the former house of James Burke and improvements. [2]

Death: Mary passed away about 1777. [3]
