In her Anniversary Book his mother recorded that, “Jackie commenced school“ on 2 April 1909.
Jack's younger sister, Lilla Justine, died in 1909 at less than a year old. In 1911, aged six, Jack was living at home in Woodbridge with his parents and five siblings. His youngest sibling, Joyce, was born in 1912.
In about 1915 the family moved to Derbyshire where Jack’s father took up the duties of manager of the Dronfield Gas Company.[4] Jack’s father died of typhoid six years later, on 31 August 1921.[5]
Acting
By 1927 Jack had taken up acting, using the stage name Jack Deering.[6] In July that year he was contracted to appear in "Tell Me More".[7] The tour saw him perform at The Pavilion, Torquay in September 1927. The Stage magazine reported, “The tuneful music, catchy songs, and clever dancing were thoroughly enjoyed”.[8]
Jack also played the in "The Yellow Mask", which opened in Liverpool in early 1929.[9] By April the show had moved to the Lyceum in Sheffield and The Stage reported, "This highly spectacular piece is interpreted by a strong company".[10] See the photo of Jack as Chief Steward Newall
Son and First Marriage
André, Jack's only child, as far as we know, was born in Derbyshire in December 1927. Jack married André's mother, Dorothy Cecilia Watson, on 24 August 1929 at St Andrew's Church, in the parish of Pokesdown, Bournemouth.[11][12]
Emigration
Jack, aged 24, left from the port of London for Melbourne, Australia aboard the Mongolia on 6 September 1929, just 13 days after his wedding.[13] The story passed down was that Dorothy (or maybe her father) employed a private detective to find him. The detective reported that Jack had sailed to Australia, allegedly with his leading lady, although no evidence for this has been found. [14]
Entries exist for Jack in the Australian Electoral Rolls for 1937, 1943, 1949 and 1954, as follows:
1937, Division of Swan, subdivision of Canning: Orme, Lestyn Jack, poultry farmer.
1943, Division of Swan, subdivision of Canning: Orme, Lestyn Jack, poultry farmer.
1949, Division of Canning, subdivision of Murray: Orme, Iestyn Jack, fish merchant.
1954, Division of Fremantle, subdivision of North Fremantle, Iestyn Jack, actor.
During the war, Jack joined the Australian army.[16]
Second Marriage
Each of the four lists above has "Orme, Madeleine" listed at the same address as Jack. However, the marriage between Madeleine and Jack did not take place until 14 April 1954[17].
Acting Resumed
By 1939 Jack had returned to the stage and was also producing charity performances with the Perth Australian-Hellenic Association of Music. They performed a musical revue entitled "The Athenian Nights" in a colourful setting representing a cabaret in Athens with the Acropolis as a background, to audiances of serveral hundred people. The West Australian noted, "...the comedy which served to maintain the bright tempo of the show was led by Mr. Jack Orme, who was the producer."[18][19]
By 1948, he was again using the stage name Jack Deering.[20]
Death
Jack passed away on 24 July 1962 in Leighton, Western Australia, aged just 57 years.[21]
