Biography

(Full inline references for ease of editing [1] [2] [3] [4]).

Flag of Yorkshire (adopted 2008)
Matthew Nelson was born in Dacre, Yorkshire, England.

Matthew was born about 1826[3] in Hole Bottom, Dacre, Yorkshire[3] and was baptised at Pateley Bridge on 24 September 1826[1]. He was the son of Ellen (Hodgson) [1] and Peter Nelson (a weaver)[1].

Matthew married [[Downs-5717|Ellen (Downs)] on 7 February 1853 at Ripon cathedral[2].

Matthew became a farmer (52 acres in 1861[3]) and farmed at Hole Bottom, Dacre[3], where he had been born, for the remainder of his life. He was first aided by his brother-in-law, Thomas Downs and then by his son-in-law, William Bradbury, who took over the farm after Matthew died.

He died, aged 80[4], in 1906[4] and was buried at Thornthwaite on 1 November 1906.

Research Notes

  • Matthew and Ellen appear to have had at least five children: Shadrach (1854 - 1905)[3], Ann (1855 - X)[3], George Stephen (1857 - X)[3], Samuel (1859 - 1866)[3] and Matilda Hodgson (1862 - 1927). There is also an additional "daughter", Mary Ellen (b. c. 1870) showing up in the 1881 census with Matthew. She would have been born after Ellen died and I am not clear as yet how she fits in and whether she is in fact a granddaughter not a daughter (although there is also a granddaughter listed).
