Biography

Mary was born on July 1, 1844 [1] in Lexington, Fayette, Kentucky to Hugh L. Moore [2] and Mary Johnson.

In 1850, Mary was living with her parents and siblings in District 2, McCracken County, Kentucky.[3]

By 1860, Mary and her family were living in Liberty Township, Bollinger, Missouri, United States.[4]

Mary married Josiah Pryor Grammer on May 29, 1867 in Bollinger County, Missouri.[5] The children of Mary and Josiah were:

  1. Matilda Grammer m. 1)Robert P. Roberts 2) Paul A. Preuit
  2. Laura Ann Grammer m. 1) John Todd 2) F.L. Taylor
  3. Serena Jayne Grammer m. Henry Hans Glissmann
  4. Mary "Mollie" Frances Grammer m. Albert T. Allison
  5. Martha "Mattie" Grammer m. Hugh L. Gower

In 1870, Mary and Josiah (listed as James on this census) were living in Liberty Township, Bollinger, Missouri, United States. They were a few houses away from Mary's brother, James Moore and his family.[6]

On the 1880 Census, Mary is living in Upper, Sebastian, Arkansas, United States with her husband, Josiah, her two step sons George, age 19 and John, age 15, and their children Matilda, age 11, Laura, age 7, Rhena (Serena) age 5 and Mary F. age 3.[7]

Mary was living with her widowed son-in-law, Henry Glissmann on June 9, 1900 in Ward 7, Austin, Travis, Texas. Mary's daughter, Serena Jayne had just passed away in March. Also living with them is Henry and Serena's 3 year old daughter, Marguriete along with Mattie or Martha Grammer, age 19. Mary Grammer's daughter.[8]

In 1910, Mary was living with her daughter, Laura Todd, also widowed in Ward 5, Austin, Travis, Texas. Also living with them was Mary's grandson, Allen Roberts, age 24 and Laura's daughters: Annie, 17, Ione 15, Johnie F. 10.[9]

Mary is listed in the available phone directories for Austin, Texas in

1909-10 Grammer, Mary (wid. Joseph (sic) h 1901 E. 20th. Her daughter Laura Todd has a separate entry in this directory. They are living at the same address.[10]

On January 7, 1920, Mary was living with her granddaughter, Anne (Todd) Pierson, along with her family and with her daughter, Laura (Grammer) Todd in Ward 1, Austin, Travis Texas. [21]

April 9, 1930 finds Mary, age 85 living with her widowed daughter, Laura Todd, age 57 in Austin, Travis, Texas.[22]

Mrs. Mary F. Grammer, 85, pioneer resident of Austin, passed away at the home of her daughter Laura Ann Todd near Montopolis bridge, Saturday morning at 5:45.[23] She died on June 14, 1930 near Austin, Travis County, Texas.[24]

She is buried in Section 3, Lot 1087 of the Oakwood Cemetery, Austin, Travis, Texas. [25] [26]

I question whether the Paul Alvaldez listed in the 1900 census as Henry Glismann's son is really his son. The child would have been born only a year before Henry married his wife Serena, and we have no evidence of a previous marriage for him. Henry was born in Germany. Alvaldez sounds like a Spanish name. Further research is needed.
