John Vine Milne was born on 1845 in Clarendon, West Indies, Jamaica, the son of William Milne and Harriett Newell (Barrett) Milne.[1]
In the 1851 census, we find John Vine Milne living with his parents in Baldock, Hertfordshire. By this time, he had two younger brothers. One servant was also part of the household.[2] The household has moved to Northumberland Park Grove, Tottenham, Middlesex by 1861. Though the census records shows him as "N, 6," he in fact was age 16 by then, occupied as an Engineer. He now has three additional siblings (total of six children in the household).[3] By age 26, John has become a teacher, and his family of origin now lives in Braintree, Essex. In this 1871 census, four brothers of his remain in the home, two servants are present, and six pupil scholars are under tutelage (his father is School Master).[4]
John married Sarah Marie Maria Heginbotham, daughter of Peter Heginbotham, on 27 Jul 1878 at St John the Baptist, Buxton, Derbyshire, England.[5]
By the 1881 Mortimer Road, Hampstead, London, Middlesex census, John has become a schoolmaster. He and his wife, Sarah Maria (Heginbotham) Milne now have two children. His brother, Alexander, was also a schoolmaster, present in the household.[6]
Among their children of the 1881 household were two sons:[6]
In the 1891 census, we find that the family has moved Hampstead, London. A governess is now in the employ of the household as is an assistant and four servants. Pupils range in age from 12-17, nine, in total.[7]
Among children of the 1891 household were:[7]
Westgate on Sea at Kent is the residence of the family in 1901. Though his occupation is still listed as Schoolmaster, the household is distinguished by the presence of only him and his wife.[8] That status is changed to Retired Schoolmaster in 1911, when the household sees the return of his 29 year old son, Alan Alexander. Two servants and a visitor round out the Steeple Bumpstead, Essex household.[9]
No census records appear for 1921 or 1931.
John passed away on 11 Jun 1932 in Croydon, Surrey, England.[10][11]
David Barrett Milne was the primary beneficiary named in probate.[12]
