Governor of South Carolina. The son of Arthur Middleton, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, he was a South Carolina planter and political leader. He served in the South Carolina House of Representatives from 1802 to 1810, served as Governor of South Carolina from 1810 to 1812, served in the United States Congress as a Representative from South Carolina from 1815 to 1819, and was United States Minister to Russia from 1820 to 1830. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Middleton_%28governor%29

Henry Middleton died in 1846. He wrote his will 4 May 1846, proven 17 Jun 1846.[1]

Slavery

Henry Middleton was a slave holder. His probate inventory named and valued the enslaved after his death.[2]

Henry mortgaged for $100,000 the Newport Plantation and all the enslaved on it (100+). The enslaved were named in the mortgage documents.[3] This plantation was to be mortgaged to Henry A. Middleton in 1837-1842[4]
