Governor of South Carolina. The son of Arthur Middleton, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, he was a South Carolina planter and political leader. Slavery

Henry Middleton was a slave holder. His probate inventory named and valued the enslaved after his death.^[2]

Henry mortgaged for $100,000 the Newport Plantation and all the enslaved on it (100+). The enslaved were named in the mortgage documents.^[3] This plantation was to be mortgaged to Henry A. Middleton in 1837-1842^[4]
