Biography

John McKane was born in 1846. He was the son of John McKane Esq of Wrexham, Northamptonshire, and his wife Elizabeth Esther Grigs. His father was a woollen draper and hatter, born in Brampton Cumberland around 1816.

In 1851 and 1861 they lived at 2 Market Place, Hexham, Northamptonshire.

In 1871 he was boarding with Cuthbert Wilkinson, a railway guard and his wife Mary Wilkinson at 28 Cumberland Row, Newcastle upon Tyne. John was a woollen merchant.

In 1881 he was living in a private boarding house operated by sisters Ann, Susannah and Mary King at 39 Leicester Square, London. He was a was a “commercial traveller”.

In 1891 he was living in a boarding house at 5 Ilchester gardens, Paddington, run by Annabella McLeod. He was a Merchant to Australia.

In 1893 he married May Rawson. He was an Export Merchant, of 45 Barnes St W, Earls Court, London. Witnesses were Frank and Kate Rawson. Her father Charles’ profession is given as Tea Planter.

They had children:

Margaret (1895) m Andrew Denys Stocks
Kathleen (1896) m Leslie A Godfree

Margaret and Kathleen (Kitty) both became preeminent tennis players.

In 1901 and 1911 they lived at 45 Barnes St, Marylebone, London.

Mary died in 1929.

John died in 1936.
