Biography

Egbert Swillie McGee was born 8 Feb (probably) 1897 in Camden, Kershaw County, South Carolina, to Charles Ervin McGee and Lula (Hinson) McGee. [1][2] He was not consistent in his use of a birth year. In 1937, when he signed his Application for Social Security Number, he used 1902 as his birth year[3] but nineteen years earlier and five years later, when filling out his Draft Registration cards in 1918 and 1942, he indicated his year of birth was 1897.[4][5]

E. S. first married Mrs. Bartie (Christenbury) York(e) on 9 September 1916 in Cabarrus, North Carolina.[6] They had at least one child, Ervin Delane McGee.[7]

After Bartie's death, Edward married Fonzie Driggers on 11 December 1928 in Bushnell, Sumter County, Florida. Fonzie's mother, Lizzie Fore Driggers, signed as a witness of her underage daughter's marriage.[8] Various records have been found that document Fonzie's year of birth between 1911 and 1917, making her at most 17 years old and at the least 11 years old. Her SS-5 lists 1915 which corresponds to the stories she told of marrying her first husband when she was 13 years old.[9] Soon after their marriage, the couple moved to Durham, North Carolina, where he was a machinist for the Carolina Motor Rebuilding Company. According to the city directory, they lived at the same address as the company. Did they own the company or was housing a benefit of employment?[10]

The couple had three children: Constance Wyvonne McGee,[11] a stillborn child, and Charles Ervin McGee.[12][13]

The 1940 census enumeration for the Edward S McGee household includes wife Fonzie, sons Ervin D and Charles, and daughter Constance. The family lived in at least two different homes that year, both near the train yards in the suburbs of Atlanta, Georgia.[14][15][16]

Edward was employed by CSX Transportation as a machinist from 1937 to 1942.[17] During that time, he developed a foot pedal attachment that enabled train engineers to more easily control the steam for applying the brakes. He was awarded a patent for the Locomotive Brake Control Attachment on 6 January 1942.[18] He was promoted to foreman in 1943 and held that position until his death in 1948. His yearly earnings ranged from $1,877 to $3,600[17] (approx $31,711 - $36,388 per year in 2016 dollars[19]). He worked in shops in Atlanta, Tallahassee, and Jacksonville in that time period.[14][20][2] The informant on his death certificate indicated that he was the roundhouse foreman at the Seaboard Shops.

Edward died 26 May 1948 at 841 Ellis Road in Jacksonville, Duval County, Florida.[2] He is buried in Riverside Memorial Park, Unit 3, Lot 92-7, Jacksonville, Duval County, Florida.[21]

Following his death, Fonzie and her children received payments from an insurance annuity through the Railroad Retirement Board. Combined, they received a check each month for just under $87/mo (approx $10,548/year in 2016 dollars).[22]
