Biography

John Wesley (J.W.) McBee was the eldest son of William McBee and Elizabeth Milligan. He was born on 9 Feb 1831 in Stark County, Ohio. In 1836, his parents moved the family from Ohio to Ray County, Missouri. In 1852, his parents again moved their family west on the Oregon Trail to settle in Benton County, Oregon Territory. J.W. married Elizabeth Jane Matheny, who had traveled west with her siblings as part of the McBee Wagon Train, on 31 Oct 1855 in Marion County, Oregon Territory. They had 5 children. Elizabeth Jane died in Mar 1870 from tuberculosis. J.W. married "the girl next door" Josephine Grubbs on 21 Jul 1874 in Benton County, Oregon. In Oct 1874, J.W. moved his family to Lane County, Oregon. J.W. and Josephine had 5 children. J.W. died on 22 Jan 1888 and is buried at IOOF Pioneer Cemetery near the University of Oregon campus in Eugene, Lane County, Oregon.

Such settlement was commenced on the 15th day of September 1855. Issued at Oregon City on 25 May 1872.

John W. McBee of Benton County hereby gives notice of my claim to donation of 160 acres. Fractional S 1/2 of NW qtr of Sec. 6 T13S R4W, Fractional N 1/2 of SW qtr of Sec. 6 T13S R4W, River Lot No. 7 or so much as will complete my quantity. Salem, OT 29th November 1855.
Affidavit that John W. McBee is a white maile settler on public lands in Oregon Territory, that he arrived in said Territory in the month of October 1852, that he will be above the age of 21 years on the 1st day of December 1855, that he is a native citizen of the United States and that he was born in Stark Co. Ohio in the year 1831, that he has personally resided upon and cultivated that part of the public lands in Oregon Territory continuously from the 15th day of October 1855 to the 29th day of November 1855, and he further says that he is intermarried with Elizabeth McBee his wife, and that he was legally married to her on the 31st day of October 1855 in Marion Co. Sworn on 29th November 1855.

McBee and knows that he has personally resided upon and cultivated said tract or tracts of land continuously from the 15th day of September 1855 to the 6th day od December 1859.
