Biography

Birth: Edmund Heinrich MATTHIAS (Ted), on 21 July 1887, the Matthias family farm Waterloo, near Manoora in the Mid North of South Australia, father Friedrich Louis MATTHIAS, mother Marie Louise Wilhelmine BEHN. (3)

Early life: Ted spent his early years on the Waterloo farm and in 1911 moved with his family to Lameroo in the Murray Mallee Region of South Australia. After suffering a series of difficult drought years, his parents relocated to work on a dairy farm at Woods Point near Murray Bridge. Ted attended school in Woods Point. (7)

Marriage: on 26 June 1918, age 30, single, in Schomburgh, near Morgan, South Australia, to Anna Elisabeth LINDNER Lindner-465, age 23, single, daughter of Friedrich Wilhelm LINDNER Lindner-434. (4)

1. Maxwell Edmund (Max) MATTHIAS Matthias-205, born 29 Mar 1919 in Murray Bridge, South Australia, married Edna May GERICKE Gericke-230 on 29 May 1948.

2. Clair Elizabeth MATTHIAS Matthias-201, born 07 May 1921 in Murray Bridge, South Australia, married Friedrich Wilhelm NOACK Noack-235 on 30 Aug 1941.

3. Lance William MATTHIAS Matthias-206, born 02 Feb 1923 in Murray Bridge, South Australia, Australia, died at the age of 2 weeks.

4. Constance Marie MATTHIAS Matthias-207 (twin), born 04 Feb 1926 in Murray Bridge, South Australia, died at the age of 3 weeks.

5. Betty Lorraine MATTHIAS Matthias-208 (twin), born 4 Feb 1926 in Murray Bridge, South Australia.

Occupation: Apart from assistance with farm work, Ted also worked on construction of the railway bridge over the River Murray. For many years he was Mill Foreman at the Noske Flour Mill, Murray Bridge. It was a delight for his grandchildren to visit him at the Mill and to enjoy the delicious aromas of newly milled grains.

Ted was a jovial, generous and much loved friend in his community and particularly to his family. He was a very active and long serving member of the Holy Cross Lutheran Church at Murray Bridge.

Death: at Murray Bridge on 01 December 1961. His death was deeply felt by many. (5)
