Health & Wellbeing

William has not had many significant health issues in his life to date. The only exceptions are a fractured and dislocated pinkie finger on his left hand from playing cricket at Eltham Cricket Club c. 2006. The only other issue was a fractured left calcaneus which occurred accidentally in 2009 at his home in St Kilda, Victoria[36]

Family

Ancestral Origins

William's paternal ancestry in the direct Maher xy Chromosome lineage is most recently from County Clare in the province of Munster on the west coast of Ireland. In particular, the areas of Kilfenora and Ballyvaughan in north Clare. The town lands of Ballybreen & Ballygoonaun are where my Maher and Slattery lineages hail from. My belief is that the Mahers of County Clare came to be in Clare before the famine; possibly as a result of Oliver Cromwell's invasion of Ireland and dispersal of the native populations to other areas. I have yet to prove this theory[42]

William's maternal ancestry is an admixture of English & Irish. My mother is three quarters English and a quarter Irish. The Johnson family lived in the north of England for several centuries but were originally Johnstons from Dumfriesshire, Scotland who came to England for reasons unknown. The Johnstons & Johnsons settled in Kirklinton area in Cumberland, England. My O'Sullivan lineage hail from County Kerry, Ireland. The townland of Gurrane where they were numerous[45]

Ancient History

Reliable history sources have recorded the Mahers as a cadet sept of the O'Carroll clann of Eile and Ormond in central Ireland from ancient times. The name Maher|Meagher is derived from the Gaelic name O'Meachair. This translates as "Hospitable" or "Kindly". The original registered Maher CoA (Coat of Arms) bears the Motto In Periculis Audax.
This translates as Bold in Danger. The Mahers were resident centrally at Ikerrin Barony of County Tipperary, Munster.
The Mahers resisted the Norman invasion in the 12th century and fought valiantly to keep their patrimony when Oliver Cromwell invaded Ireland in August 1649.[48]
Two of William's lineages are families from County Antrim and County Donegal in Ulster. Specifically; Gregg and Tease lineages whom I descend through my Great Grandmother Mary Jane Gregg and Mary's mother Margaret Jane Tease.[49]
Both these surnames are found in Ulster c. 16th|17th centuries.[50]

Royal or Aristocratic Houses Descent

My genealogy research thus far has shown that I am related to several ancient European Royal|Aristocratic Houses. These include: Arpad , Bruce , Capet , de Fiennes , Douglas , Drummond , Hohenzollern , Howard , Huntly/Seton , Keith , Komnenos , Le Botiler , Macgregor , Neville , Oldenburg , Percy , Plantagenet , Valois , Stewart , Visconti[51]

Short Term Wikitree Goals

My focus on Wikitree is filling out my tree with verified ancestors. My aim is to have at least 256 ancestors added to the Wikitree Big Tree (eight generations) before 2030. Time permitting, I will attempt to find missing pieces of my family history jigsaw puzzle (presuming I am alive in 2030). In the interim, I will devote time to editing profiles in the groups I am involved with (ANZAC, Euroarista & Australia Projects)

Hi, William, could you please refrain from adding multiple level 2 headers in biographies as there are only certain such headers permitted and all the others will generate error messages.

Also, please refrain from altering the Find a Grave citation as copied and pasted from the memorials. You may not like the url link at the top of the citation, but that is how FG has it.

If you wish to see a name bolded, please use the correct formatting - three apostrophes - and please refrain from editing correct date formats to something you prefer unless it is on profiles you manage.

Thanks, Melanie Paul, Australia Project Team Leader Profile Improvements, Data Doctors, Sourcerers, Biography Builders.

Melanie;

Thanks for your message. In my defence I am trying to use Chicago Manual of Style (17th Edition) as my formatting style default. I understand WikiTree has it's own Style Guidelines so I will try to stick to them from now on. However, when I first started on WikiTree I was of the belief that there was more than "one way of doing things" and that there were no hard and fast rules to follow. After rebukes from Amanda Myers and now yourself; I will tread much more carefully as the 'accepted way of editing' does not seem to be what it was when I started i.e) there was user latitude in editing. The common thread in this message seems to be that the Australia Project has much stricter rules than WikiTree more broadly. Please note that it is not my intention to cause waves in the Australia Project....I have been a member since 2017 and am still learning the ropes. I do feel I have a better understanding now. Kind regards,

William Maher

Hi, William - the standards for biographies are not from the Australia Project but are WikiTree's standards. Please refer to Help Biographies with particular attention to the subsection on the optional "Additional subsections" which designates the header sizes.

The WikiTree example for a Find a Grave citation is found on Links in source citations where it says "Source citations are formatted automatically by Find A Grave" and where it explains how to add the template for FG inside the FG-generated citation while showing the FG-generated citation with the link at the top. (Note, use of the template is optional, but heavily encouraged in case of possible future link failure.)

It has also been noted that you moved the "See also" section on some profiles to above the Sources header. This also is incorrect and goes against the layout as designated by the Help Biographies (as linked) where it is to be situated between the Sources/references pair, and the Acknowledgements header if it is used. See also should be in plain text.

Thanks, Melanie Paul, Australia Project Team Leader Profile Improvements, Data Doctors, Sourcerers, Biography Builders.

Amanda;

Please be more specific WikiTree is a place of collaboration not the exclusive domain of proud dominators of other people. Unless the profiles in question have limited access then anyone may edit as they choose. It is one thing to be compliant to style but unless there are ultra strict rules then I don't believe you can tell me how to edit if the formatting doesn't suit your own tastes

Hi William

You made changes to the profile of William George Hayden AC (1933-2023) which is managed by the Australia Project.

See the section Proper order on the Biographies help page: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Biographies, please. As you can see "See Also:" is not used as a header and is located under the "Sources" header as it was already on the profile.

Please be careful how you change other peoples work.

Hi William, we have migration categories for immigrants from Ireland, in the form "Migrants from County Louth to Victoria" as an example, or "Victoria, Immigrants from Ireland" as an example, where the Irish county they migrated from is not known. If any required are existing yet, we can create them.

Regards, Margaret.

Hi William, you've noted John Vivian Fortescue (Gregg) Gregg-MacGregor DCM for those two troopship category requests, one left in Aug 1916 and one in Sept 1916 so he couldn't have been on both? Looking at his profile, the bio says he was on the Berrima in 1914 (category on profile), but there are also about 6 or 7 others added that again are similar times, that he couldn't have been on. No other trips are recorded in the biography. It looks like he did return in 1916 to Europe, but only would have gone on one troopship??

Hi William

I'm contacting you for the annual ANZACS Project membership checkin. We really appreciate your involvement in the Project in the last year. Thank you so much for all your help to improve profiles of ANZACs on WikiTree.

Please could you reply to this profile comment, or send me a private message to let me know if you'd like to stay on in the Project, and if so, what ANZACs activity you're planning to work on over the coming year. There are some ideas for activities on this page - Project:Anzacs. You could also add or update your entry on the 'Project Members and what we are doing' heading on that page.

If you've moved on to other things for the moment, that's absolutely fine. We'd appreciate if you'd let us know so that we can remove you as a member of the Project.

The ANZACs Project is a sub-project of the Military and War Project, which has a channel on Discord. If you're not on Discord yet, here's some information - Help:Discord. It's a great way to communicate with other members of the Project and help each other out.

We're always happy to receive any ideas or suggestions that you have to make our project even better.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

Hi Margaret,

Thanks for the check in... I have been busy these last few weks working on adding and improving profiles to the Big Tree

Most but not all of the profiles I have been working on are Australian

I am happy with my current level of participation in the ANZAC project

I keep an eye on the Honour Rolls for WWI & WWII in an attempt to correct any formatting issues with newly added profiles

Like the people listed on the rolls themselves, I like to have a disciplined and diligent approach to editing the ANZAC project pages

So to sum up, yes, I will continue as a member in 2024. not looking to make waves in terms of particpation but as someone with a strong interest in all things ANZAC, I want to ensure that profiles I have contributed to or created are well maintained to WikiTree expectations and standards

Best wishes in 2024,

Hi William, thanks for adding the category requests, I need a link to the profile to be added to the categories. Thanks! regards, Margaret.
Hi William,

The category Australia, Emigrants shouldn't be added to profiles, it is the top level of the migration structure for categories for people emigrating from Australia. Profile for immigrants to Australia should be added to the lowest possible category. See this change, https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Johnson-51141&diff=189357422&oldid=188184948

This page might help with adding migration categories, https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Migration_Categories_to_Australia

Hi William,

Category:Profiles_With_Incomplete_Sourcing is specifically for use by Profile Managers who would like assistance sourcing profiles they manage. It is not needed on orphaned profiles because anyone can work on those without stepping on toes. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Hi William, can you make sure you check the categories on a profile after saving, after you add the Estimated Date template. Unless the parameter is exactly correct, it adds a red, incorrect category to the profile.

See https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Template:Estimated_Date

Thanks, regards, Margaret

Margaret, my apologies...I will have a look at my suggestions list and try to fix the errors.

William

posted by William Maher
Hi William, no problem, you won't see anything on your suggestion list, they don't appear there. They come up on the red category list and someone edits the template on the profile to fix them.

After you add the template to a profile, then save, then just have a quick look at the categories to see if any are red. That template page shows the correct combinations of Birth Death Marriage to use to get the correct category.

Regards, Margaret.

Margaret;

Thanks for the check-in on behalf of the Australia Project. I understand there may be some parts of the AP I am not currently involved with such as Discord groups. However, I am satisfied with my current level of participation and see no reason to change my input and/or contributions as they stand. I have done a considerable amount of work adding and editing ANZAC profiles. I have done a small amount of work in the November Sourcerers Challenge but am not aiming for 'big numbers' in that regard. My work in ANZAC project ties in neatly with my editing in the Australia Project. I am always available by email or on my profile page when necessary. All the very best to Gillian, Veronica, yourself and the other team leaders heading in to 2024. I for one, am optimistic about the possibilities as a collaborative genealogist vis-a-vis WikiTree and the wider global family history community. If we don't speak again before Christmas, Merry Christmas and a safe and peaceful New Year. Chinese Year of the Dragon (2024). 🎆🎆🎆🎆☯️☯️🇦🇺🇦🇺🇨🇳🇨🇳❤️💛🖤❤️💛🖤☮️☮️
