Jane Macklem was born about 1850 in York, Canada West (Ontario), Canada. She is the daughter of William Macklem and Margaret Finnie.^[1] She may have been born as late as 1852 (her brother was born in October 1854).^[2]

On the 11 Jun 1860 census of Lexington, Sanilac, Michigan, United States, she is living with her father, stepmother, and three siblings.^[1]
