Biography

Scottish flag
Allan Mackintosh was born in Scotland.

Allan MacKintosh was born about 1583, perhaps at Dunnachton Castle in Alvie, Inverness-shire, Scotland.

Birth & Baptism

The date and location of Allan's birth or baptism are unknown. The year 1583 is estimated from an account given by Walter MacFarlane:

He was of a goodly appearance, and had a pleasant disposition. He died in 1646, aged sixty-three, and was buried in the church of Daviot.[1]

Allan's father was Lachlan Mackintosh (abt.1545-1606), known as Lachlan Mór (meaning Lachlan "the Great"), who was the 16th Chieftain of Clan MacKintosh. His mother was Agnes (Mackenzie) Mackintosh (abt.1555-abt.1610), Daughter of Kintail, whose father was Kenneth (Mackenzie) Mackenzie Xth of Kintail (abt.1513-1568).

Concerning the children of Lachlan Mór, the author Alexander Mackintosh tells us that "Lachlan left seven sons and six daughters."[2] Alan was Lachlan's sixth son, according to this account.[2]

Marriages & Children

The Clan MacKintosh literature claims that Allan had taken three wives. Specifically, Alexander MacKintosh enumerates, with regard to Lachlan’s sixth son:

Alan, who m.
(1) Elizabeth, dau. of David Rose of Holm, by whom he had Lachlan and Alexander;
(2) Lilias, dau. of Patrick Falconer of Newtown (brother to the laird of Halkerton), by whom he had Angus; and
(3) Euphemia, dau. of Campbell of Calder. He feuded Daviot, and died in 1646.[2]

This author may have had as a reference the work of Walter MacFarlane, which had only recently been translated and published in 1900. MacFarlane (in translation from Latin) wrote:

Allan, the sixth son of Lauchlan, married ———Rose, daughter of David Rose of Holm, by whom he had Lauchlan and Alexander, and ———daughters. Secondly, he married Lilias Falconer, daughter of Patrick Falconer, brother of the laird of Halkerton, by whom he had Aeneas [Angus], and two daughters. He married thirdly, Euphemia Campbell, daughter of the laird of Calder. He had also two bastard sons, John and William.[1]

First Wife: Elizabeth Rose

Two sons were born of the marriage of Alan Mackintosh and Elizabeth Rose.

  1. Lachlan Mackintosh
  2. Alexander Mackintosh

Second Wife: Lilias Falconer

Allan is said to have only one son from his marriage to Lilias Falconer.

  1. Angus Mackintosh

A possible reference to Angus is found in the Invereshie Book of Clan MacPherson, compiled by Aeneas Macpherson (1644-1705):

Paul Oig feued the lands of Dalrady. He married Janet Mcpherson, daughter to John Mcpherson of Nood and hade be her one son called Donald and two daughters viz: Isobell (married to James Mcpherson of Invernahaun) and Janet (married to Angus McIntoshe alias McAllan of Tullochmagerry.) (Part 3 – Sliochd Kynach, Page 31.)[3]

The clarification of "alias McAllan" identifies Angus as the son of Allan Mackintosh. The place name "Tullochmagerry" has not be identified. This would assist in verifying where this Angus was dwelling and if he might have belonged to this family group.

Walter MacFarlane specified that Alan had "two daughters" with his second wife, Lilias Falconer, but offered no names for them.[1] If one of these two daughters were to have been given her mother’s name, then it could be possible that Lilias (Mackintosh) McPherson (abt.1613-abt.1680) would have belonged to this family group.

Further support for Lilias McIntosh belonging to the family group was recorded by Aeneas Macpherson (1644-1705), as regards Alexander McPherson of Essich:

Alexander married Lillias McIntoshe, daughter to Allan son to the Laird of McIntoshe and hade be her two sons viz: Donald and Dowgall and one daughter called Margaret. (Part 3 – Sliochd Kynach, Page 24)[3]

The date and location of the marriage of Alexander McPherson (abt.1615-abt.1679) of Essich and Lilias MacKintosh are currently unknown. It has been estimated to have occurred in at least 1648, based on the confirmed dates of the baptisms of three of their children.

In the very same compilation, only a few pages later, Aeneas Macpherson (1644-1705) recorded Lilias MacKintosh also being married to Andrew McPherson of Bellachroan thus:

Andrew (sixth son to Donald more) married Lillias McIntoshe, daughter to Allan son to Lachlan more, laird of McIntoshe and hade be her two sones Andrew and John and one daughter called Lillias (married to William Mcpherson son to Donald Mcpherson of Phoyness. (Part 3 – Sliochd Kynach, Page 28).[3]

As Andrew of Bellachroan seems to have been contemporary to his cousin, Alexander of Essich, it is not certain whether Andrew was another husband of Lilias. It could also be possible that Andrew married the second daughter of Allan and Lilias Falconner, who remains un-named as yet. Further inquiry is required to verify the claim.

Third Wife: Euphemia Campbell

There is no issue claimed to be from this marriage.

Property & Land

Allan McIntosh, who held the claim as 1st Laird of Daviot, in Inverness-shire, received this honor from his father.

Allan received from his father possession of the lands of Daviot. He was of a goodly appearance, and had a pleasant disposition...[1]

Lachlan Mór’s claim to Daviot

Alexander MacKintosh tells us about the land in Daviot:

In Lachlan’s time the family estate was enlarged by the acquisition of Cullóden — which for a time was the principle residence of the family — and of Tullich, Elrig, and Lairgs in Strathnairn. Cullóden, with the pendicle of Culchuineag in Daviot Parish, was acquired, probably for the sake of its corn lands , in 1576-1582 from the three heiresses portioners of George Strachan (Strathauchin, as then written), whose family had held it for some generations. The lands were Crown Lands, and on George Strachan’s death, Mackintosh had obtained the gift of his daughter’s ward, marriage, and non-entry, subsequently purchasing the rights from them and their husbands (P. 187).[2]

Walter MacFarlane accounts for the acquisition of Lairgs:

In the year 1587, Mackintosh acquired the heritable rights of the Barony of Lairgs.(P. 243).[1]

Nevertheless, it is interesting to note that Alexander Mackintosh also tells us:

On the 27th June 1568, we find Lachlan obtaining from Huntly, as superior, the heritable right of Benchar, Clune, Kincraig, Schiphin, Essich, Bochrubin, Dundelchat, and Tordarroch—some of these "castle lands" of Inverness,—together with a fresh grant (charter de novo damus) of the barony of Dunachton.[4]

Daviot Parish

The Laird of Mackintosh is recorded with regard to Daviot Parish for three consecutive years among the Land Tax Rolls for Inverness-shire.

In volume 2 is recorded, regarding "Daviot paroch:"

The Laird of Mackintosh for Largs one hundred fourtie three pounds Six Shillings eight pennies…Lachlan Mackintosh of Daviot one houndred and fourty pounds.[5]

In volume 3, regarding "Daviot paroch;"

The Laird of McIntosh for Largs One Hundred fourty three pounds six shillings eight pennies…Lachlan McIntosh of Daviot One Hundred and fourty pounds.[6]

In volume 4, regarding Daviot parish:

The Laird of McIntosh for Larges one hundred fourty three pund six shillings eight pennies…Lachlan McIntosh of Daviot one hundrd. [hundred] & fourty pund.[7]

Death & Burial

As has been quoted many times over, as regards Allan:

He was of a goodly appearance, and had a pleasant disposition. He died in 1646, aged sixty-three, and was buried in the church of Daviot. (P. 274)[1]

Research Notes

As noted in the biography, inquiry would assist discerning the daughters born of Allan’s marriage to Lilias Falconer. The claims made by Sir Aeneas need to been investigated and further authenticated with sources.

Balfour’s Peerage, Cokayne’s Baronetage or Douglas' Baronage might have more specific information on the MackIntosh/McIntosh family of Lachlan Mór, as well as the Falconer family, from the Laird of Halkerton.
