Biography

Margaret was a younger daughter to Lauchlan Mor 16th Chief of MacIntosh and Chief of the Clan Chattanand his wife Agnes Mackenzie.[1]

Margaret was brought up at her father's estate of Dunachton in Badenoch.

While still a child a preliminary Contract of Marriage was agreed at Inverness on 24 Apr 1590 between Angus McDonald McAngus, eldest son and apparent heir of Donald McAngus of Glengarry, and Margaret McIntosh, daughter of Lachlan McIntosh of Dunachton, with consent of their respective fathers, who had in view by this union the strengthening of the friendship between the two houses. They were to be married when Angus attained his fifteenth year, and Margaret then to be infeft by Glengarry in liferent in lands worth 500 merks of yearly rent. Her father Lachlan promised to make her consent to the marriage at that time, and to give with her a tocher (dowry) of 3000 merks.[2][3]

The eventual marriage was brief as Angus McDonald younger of Glengarry was killed in the north west of Scotland about 1603 in a feud with the MacKenzies.

Margaret married secondly about 1608 to Robert Farquharson second son to Donald Farquharson of Castleton of Braemar. Later he became Farquharson of Finzean. The Farquharsons were staunch followers of Clan Chattan recognising her father as Chief.

Robert Farquharson and Margaret McIntosh had 4 sons and a daughter[4]:

  • Alexander
  • Robert
  • William
  • Donald
  • Isobell married to John Gordon of Blelack.

Robert Farquharson and his wife Margaret MacIntosh were granted on 27 July 1633 sasine of various lands, mills and fishings in the Sheriffdom of Inverness.[5] Earlier these lands of Mekill and Little Clynes, with mill, fishings, etc, and also of the lands of Wester and Easter Foulis, with manor-place, the touns and lands of Kertwall and Drummond, with mill, etc, and of the lands of Contillich and Carbestell, in Easter Ross in the sheriffdom of Inverness formerly pertained to Robert Monro of Foulis and were apprised from him at the instance of Margaret McIntosch and her spouse as assignees of her sister, the deceased Marion McIntosch, sometime spouse of Robert Monro, for 5,000 merks on 20 Sep 1631.

I am well aware of using proper sources as far too many of Wikitree entries are copied from unreliable internet sources. What is wrong with the sources I provided when creating this profile? The National Archives of Scotland hold the primary sources used and the Broughdearg MSS was researched around 1700 by Alexander Farquharson who was in touch with all of the Farquharson families and widely recognised as a major reliable work.

Jack, the Pre-1700 Help page is very clear in that "You must never create a pre-1700 profile without citing a reliable source." https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Pre-1700_Profiles

Please go back and add a reliable source or sources for this profile, before making any more changes.

Thank you
