Biography

John Low immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).
This profile is part of the Chebacco Parish, Massachusetts One Place Study.

John was baptized on 2 Mar 1633/4, in Boxford, Suffolk, England;[1] He was the son of Thomas Low and Margaret Todd.

He emigrated with his father from England to New England by 1640. The first record of his father's presence there is in the records of Ipswich on 6 April 1641, when he was granted ten acres adjacent to his previous ten acres.[2] Anderson concludes in the Great Migration Directory from this record that they were present in New England by 1640.[3]

John Lowe was married (first) December 10, 1661, Sarah Thorndike, daughter of John and Elizabeth Thorndike of Beverly. He married (second) Dorcas _____. He died intestate on January 28, 1705-6 [4]

Research Notes

Following up on the comments, the evidence from the Ipswich records is circumstantially strong that Sarah (Thorndike) Low died some time after the birth of Margaret and that John Low married 2nd wife Dorcas before 1674. I found no records to indicate Dorcas' maiden name and I also have no corroboration of this profile's third wife, Elizabeth Spofford. ( Kyle Dane 19 December 2017.)

I have updated the death date per Cutter (above) and because the town records, in my experience, never list the death of a grown man as "John, son of Thomas", as the 1695 record does. It's much more likely that the John that died in 1695 was a young son of Thomas Low. Cutter appears to be referring to Probate records, as he indicates John died intestate. ( Dane-173 19 December 2017)

Thomas Low's will (Probate Records of Essex County, Vol III, Pp. 175-177, PB-17242), written April 30, 1677 and probated November 6th of that year, gave five pounds to each of his four firstborn grandchildren: Thomas Low, Margaret Davison, Sarah Low, and Sarah Safford. The other three being accounted for, we need to make room for a child Sarah Low here. (notes made by r Klop at 20:44, 4 May 2018.)

Problem Meno: First wife, Sarah married fm 1661 till death in1684 – which them should make first seven children belong to Sarah. The second wife is listed as married John in 1674 but probably sould be 1684 as Sarah was having children until 1681. If Sarah died early in 1684 and John married Dorcas sometime later in the year …then the number might all match up. Two children need a mother. Not able to do research at this time so this is kind of a heads up note.

I have seen other information that John Low was married to an Anna unknown last name. Dorcas was their child (not his wife). Other conflicting information i have is that the children listed for him and Sarah Thorndike were: David abt 1663, Sarah 1667, John 1665, Elizabeth 1667, Margaret 1668/9, Thorndike 1670-4, Daniel 1670-4, Susannah 1675 and Mary 1677. However, I have information that shows Sarah died in 1672, so these later two children could not be hers. I suggest that they were from his second marriage to Anna. Of their marriage I have the following children:

Dorcas, Martha, Joseph, Hannah, Alice 1686. However, source says Anna died in 1685. Does anyone have any further information/source that can clarify this. Thank you!
