Biography

Abraham Lord was born at Kittery, Maine, on 29 Oct 1699, the son of Nathan Lord and Martha (Tozier) Lord.[1]

Abraham Lord made his will on 11 Apr 1772. He names his sons, Simon, Benjamin Meads, Abraham, Nathan, Nicholas, Joshua, Jeremiah, David, Solomon, and Elisha. He also names Joseph and Abraham Hanson, sons of his deceased daughter, Margaret.[2]

Abraham Lord's funeral was held at the First Church of Berwick in Berwick, Maine, on 8 Apr 1779.[3]

Marriage

Abraham Lord married Margaret Gowen at Berwick, Maine, on 10 Apr 1718.[4]

From the Lord family genealogical notes of my great grandfather Isaac Purl Lord (1858-1942):

  • This Abraham (3) Lord was also a Captain in the Militia, and was the wealthiest man in Berwick Me. He owned extensive tracts of land and it is said that descendants at Eliot Me. are living on the old Homestead or portion of his vast estate. He was father of Benjamin Meads Lord, who was a noted civilian and ... the cousin of "Captain" Tobias (4) Lord, the noted Captain at Falmouth (now Portland) Maine, the youngest son of John and Mary Chapman Lord.
  • Captain Abraham Lord owned the first Chase (sic) that was seen in the town of Berwick and which, with his negro "Dinah", he bequeathed by Will to his wife "Margaret", who was daughter of Nicholas Gowen of Berwick ME, a family consideration at B.

Research Note

Eaton says that Sarah Lord, who married Samuel Jellison of Berwick on 29 Jul 1762, and whom Stackpole (and other sources) include among Abraham Lord's children, was not a daughter of Abraham and Martha Lord. She was "of York" when she married Jellison, there is no record of a baptism for her, and although she was still living in 1762 there is no mention of her or any heirs in Abraham's will.[2]
