Biography

Jessie was born in 1888. She was the daughter of Joseph Likely and Alice Boddie[1]. She and Gordon Johnston, who served in France in WWII, had three children Dorothy Likely Johnston (1917-1969), David Likely Johnston (1919-2008) and Frank Likely Johnston (1921, who died on the HMS Rajputana when it was torpedoed by Germans. Torpedoed and sunk 13 April 1941 off Iceland in position 65°50′N 27°25′W).

In 1891 her father Joe was 39, a Shipping Agent, married to Alice S. Likely. They are living in Portland Dufferin Ward, Saint John, New Brunswick with their children Arthur Likely, 12; Frank Likely, 10; David Likely, 9; Roy Likely, 8, Gordon Likely, 6 and Jessie, 2[2].

In 1911 Jessie's father Joe is 61, married, a Lumber(?) Dealer living at City Road 10, St. John with Alice, 58 and their children: Frank, 31; Gordon, 25 and Jessie, 22[3]. Note these children's names are different from a decade previous, yet are listed in Muriel Likely's notes, attached to Likely-87.

On 31 Oct 1916 Jessie, 25, married Gordon MacRae Johnston, 30, a Captain of the Infantry in St John[4].

In 1931 Jessie is 41, a widow, living at 95 Coburg St. Saint John, New Brunswick with her three children Dorothy Johnston, 13; David Johnston, 11 and Frank Johnston, 9. Note: Although she is clearly listed as a widow in the census Gordon died on 28 Oct 1961, age 75 and is buried in Fernhill Cemetery in St. John[5].

She passed away in 1969.
