Biography

In 1871 Joe, 20, a surveyor of lumber, is living with his siblings Catharine, 30, and George, 28, an edge tool maker, both born in Ireland and Henry D, 18, a clerk, born in New Brunswick. They are living in Wellington, St John, NB. They are Wesleyan Methodists, Irish[1].

Joe married Alice Sophia Hersey Boddie of St. John on 22 Aug 1877 in St. John[2].

In 1881 Joe was 30, a lumber surveyor, married to Alice living in Portland Ward 3, St. John NB with their sons Arthur Likely, 2 and Frank Likely, 1[3].

In 1891 her father Joe was 39, a Shipping Agent, married to Alice S. Likely. They are living in Portland Dufferin Ward, Saint John, New Brunswick with their children Arthur Likely, 12; Frank Likely, 10; David Likely, 9; Roy Likely, 8, Gordon Likely, 6 and Jessie, 2[4].

In 1900 Joe was a Timber Merchant at 25 North Wharf, St. John[5].

In 1911 Joe is 61, married, a Lumber(?) Dealer living at City Road 10, St. John with Alice, 58 and their children: Frank, 31; Gordon, 25 and Jessie, 22[6]. Note these children's names are different from a decade previous, yet are listed in Muriel Likely's notes, attached to Likely-87.

In 1921 Joe, 70 and Alice, 66 were living at 85 Garden, St John City Kings Ward. he was 70, a Lumber Merchant, living in a 5 room wooden house[7].

Joe died on 1 Sep 1930 in St. John, age 81[8], and was buried in Fernhill Cemetery, Saint John. Alice was buried next to him[9].

Muriel Likely writes: "Joseph A; Likely: A very clever and imaginative business man. Who started by buying a mill pond because he knew there were logs at the bottom that he thought could be used. He also bought a beach at East St John because it had three grades of gravel which he could sell to the City of St. John for using in the making of concrete. He was in the lumber business and had schooners carrying his lumber to the old Country and throughout the Maritime Provinces. He was noted for his integrity. When his sons took over the business they branched out into creosoted poles for telegraph and telephone and later into ready mixed concrete. His wife was Alice Boddie, daughter of Captain Boddie who sailed the seas whose wife and daughter sometimes sailed the seas with him. Their children: Arthur, Frank, David, Gordon, Roy and Jess.. . . Jos. A. Likely Limited did contribute toward the erection of the replica of the Celtic Cross in Three Lights Park in 1967."[10].
