Muriel Likely writes: "Joseph A; Likely: A very clever and imaginative business man. Who started by buying a mill pond because he knew there were logs at the bottom that he thought could be used. He also bought a beach at East St John because it had three grades of gravel which he could sell to the City of St. John for using in the making of concrete. He was in the lumber business and had schooners carrying his lumber to the old Country and throughout the Maritime Provinces. He was noted for his integrity. When his sons took over the business they branched out into creosoted poles for telegraph and telephone and later into ready mixed concrete. His wife was Alice Boddie, daughter of Captain Boddie who sailed the seas whose wife and daughter sometimes sailed the seas with him. Their children: Arthur, Frank, David, Gordon, Roy and Jess.. . . Jos. A. Likely Limited did contribute toward the erection of the replica of the Celtic Cross in Three Lights Park in 1967."[10].
