Biography

Ludwell Lee was born in 1842 in Loudoun County, Virginia. He was son of James Squire and Alcinda Lee.

He married Sarah Elizabeth Brown on 23 Jan 1866 in Pughtown (now Gainesboro), Virginia. Sarah was 25 years old and the daughter of Thomas and Louisa Brown. The couple had at least three sons Joseph W Lee (1867–1906), Thomas Lee (1872-1947) and Ludwell Letcher Lee (1876–1940). They also had five daughters Louisa Alcinda Lee Thompson (1869–1936), Mary Anne Lee Kelley (1872–1947), Margaret Lee (1875-1942), Maude Lee (1880-1942) and Annie Elizabeth Lee Fletcher (1883-1963).

In the 1900 Census Ludwell and wife Sarah were living in Upperville, Virginia, they were living with their son Joseph Lee. Ludwell Lee died on 22 Aug 1905 (aged 62–63) in Fauquier, Virginia.

According the the application for a pension for his wife Sarah Elizabeth Lee his death was listed as taking place near Mount Vernon on August 29, 1906. Other sources show other dates.

Many of the records show different years for the date of his birth; ranging from 1836 to 1842.

Dates used for the profile are from the Headstone shown on the Find A Grave memorial.

Multiple men named Ludwell Lee lived in the area. It appears that they were related.

Later in life his wife Sarah lived with her son-in-law and was buried in Christ Church Episcopal Cemetery Alexandria City Virginia, USA.
