Biography

Ludwell, son of Ludwell Letcher Lee and Sarah Elizabeth Brown,[1] was born in 1876.

--1st marriage and son Robert.

On 5 February 1908 in Washington, D.C., he remarried to Golden Amanda "Goldie" Caton,[1][2] daughter of Erasmus G. Caton and Alvira Frances Ayres,[3] In addition to his son by his first wife, he had seven children with Goldie, including:

  • Pauline Lee (b. 3 June 1911;[4] m. John Elliott Buell;[5] d. 13 October 1974).[4]
  • Viola Frances Lee (b. 6 April 1913;[6] m. Jackson Lacy Hitt;[7] d. 11 January 2000).[6]
  • Lillian Mildred Lee (b. 22 July 1915;[8] m. Victor Brown Hebb;[9] m. Chester C. Phillips;[10] d. 26 December 1998).[8]
  • Rae Wilson Lee (b. 8 August 1918;[11] m. Warner R Benson, Sr.;[11] d. 5 April 2004).[11]

Letcher (age 32, farmhand) and Goldie Lee (19) settled in Mercer, Loudoun County, Virginia, where they resided in 1910 his son Robert Lee (7) and their 11-month-old son.[12]

By 1920 the family had moved to Bethesda, Montgomery County, Maryland, where the household was composed of Letcher L. (age 43, experimental station worker) and Goldie Lee (28), his son Robert (18) and their children Pauline (8), Viola F. (7), Lilian M. (4), Rae W. (1) and son (10).[13] They remained in the same house in 1940, where Ludwell (age 61, gas station attendant) and Goldie (49) Lee's multi-generational household included his son Robert (36, country club caddie), their children Ray (21, telephone operator), a daughter (19), a son (16, auto mechanic), daughter Pauline (28) and her husband John Buell (28, auto mechanic) and a Buell grandson (8) and granddaughter (2).[14]

Hello from Hemet, California. I’m a former resident of Gaithersburg, MD who attended IBM College in the early 1970’s. I’m a technical writer and a retired police officer from the San Diego (CA) Police Department. I currently serve as a writer, seminar presenter/instructor, and Operations Editor for American Towman Magazine. I have a passion for the industry and its historic value that conducts and long-time research regarding tow truck operator deaths.

Since March 2018, I’ve worked on retracing the accidental drowning death of John Elliott Buell, a tow truck driver and Maryland shop owner who was said to have been the Chief of the Bethesda, MD, Volunteer Fire Department, and was killed October 16, 1942, or serving in his role as tow truck operator.

I discovered this information on a WikiTree website noting family tree research on one, Golden Amanda “Goldie” Lee, formerly Caton. Your research makes specific mention of John Elliott Buell and his wife, Pauline Lee Buell, both who lay at rest in the Oakwood Cemetery, Falls Church. I believe that Goldie would have been Mr. Buell’s mother-in-law? The head of household would have bee Ludwell Letcher Lee.

From the 1940 Census, family at residence would have been:

Ludwell Letcher Lee - Head of Household Golden Amanda "Goldie" Lee - his Wife Robert Lee - Son Rae Lee - Daughter Margaret Lee - Daughter Ernest - Son Pauline (Lee) Buell - Daughter John Elliott Buell - Son in Law L. John L. Buell - Grandson Nancy Buell - Grandaughter

Here are two bits of information I was able to glean from the Internet.

http://www.monocacymonocle.com/images/issues_2006/MM_2006-10-06.pdf

“October 17, 1942. The chief of the Bethesda Fire Department drowned in flood waters on River Road near Cabin John Run. Officials said that John Buell drowned while attempting to save citizens who were trapped in the flood. Chief Buell had responded from home when he heard about cars trapped in the floodwaters sweeping across River Road. He was attempting to attach a tow line to one of the cars when he was swept away.”

“October 17, 1942, the chief of the Bethesda Volunteer Fire Department was drowned in flood waters that swept across River Road near Seven Locks Road. Chief John Buell had taken his tow truck to a location where a motorist was trapped by raging waters, and as he attempted to attach a tow line to the car, he was swept into a creek. His body was later found several hundred yards away.”

It is my intent to nominate John Buell to the towing and recovery industry which has its own Wall of the Fallen (Chattanooga, TN.) for tow truck operators killed in the line of duty. I believe that Mr. Buell died in service to his community and was not on official fire department duty at the time. Regardless as to him not working under official capacity at the time of his death, to have not been recognized by any person, agency or entity, is a travesty at its highest level. I am working to have his name added to the Towing and Recovery Wall of the Fallen and must meet qualifying requirements.

It’s my hope to make contact with any family members or further generation of John Elliott Buell with hopes to complete the memorial process to add John Elliott to the Wall of the Fallen.

In cold case fashion like that of a police detective, mine has been a two-year research project in which I’ve written as many as 35-letters and countless Emails in my research. I’ve chased many, many leads and I’m ecstatic to have found you as a possible means to contacting Mr. Buell’s living descendants.

May I ask that you will forward this message to Mr. Buell’s extended family or please provide me with any family member contact information? My email address is [email address removed] Please note that I am NOT a stalker and my intentions are honorable with intent of seeing that Mr. Buell is recognized for dying in an act of valor.

Thank you very much and I look forward to hearing from you.
