Biography

Robert Lauder of That Ilk. He appears in a great many archival documents and records. In the Berwickshire Retours of Services of Heirs, number 12, confirmed 7th April 1585, Robert Lauder of that Ilk was retoured heir to Robert Lauder of that Ilk, 'avi' - his grandfather. On 1st August 1589, the Crown confirmed a charter to Robert Lauder of that Ilk and his spouse Margaret Borthwick of the lands and forest of Lauder with their granary, mill etc. which Robert had resigned for a regrant. In 1590 a Crown List of 'Landed Men' in the Lothians and Borders was drawn up, amongst whom is "Lauder" in Berwickshire. These would be Lords Superiors, as opposed to feuholders.

Stewart-Smith (1898) states that this Robert Lauder of that Ilk was killed in the Tolbooth Raid by the Homes & Cranstouns on 5th March 1598. But according to The Calendar of the State Papers the murders at the Tolbooth took place on the 10th May, 1598.[1]

His Testament was given up by Margaret Borthwick, his widow, who proved the Testament on 10th March 1599 .[2] She was nominated tutrix testamentor to Elizabeth, Jane, Barbara, William, Robert, and Richard Lauder, his lawful children procreated between him and said Margaret, who were his executors. The value of his moveable goods inventory amounted to £867.13s.4p, a fairly standard sum for minor gentry. He was owed £5 at death and himself owed £36 in fees to servants. His Latterwill [included in the same registration] was dated 2nd March 1595 before witnesses: Mark Borthwick, William Borthwick of Soutra, and a servant. The cautioner was John Edmondstone, portioner [land-owner] at 'Fawlay' [Fala]. In this, Robert Lauder of that Ilk appoints Margaret his spouse to be universal intromettor with his goods and gear and debts as well as being the tutrix testamentor to his children during their minority. In the event of her decease, Sir Robert Ker of Cessford, knight, was to become their tutor testamentor.[3]

He had seven known children, all apparently under age at the time of their father's murder. Of the two daughters mentioned in his Testament, Barbara and Jane, nothing further is known.
