Biography

A great-great-granddaughter of William 2nd Lord Borthwick. Her brother William Borthwick of Soutra [and Johnstounburn] was the leading witness to her husband Robert Lauder's Testament.

In The Registers of the Privy Council of Scotland dated 14th and 28th September 1598, there is a complaint and a Bond by Margaret Borthwick, relict of Robert Lauder of that Ilk concerning William Lauder in Cauldscheilles (Robert's younger brother) who is trying to oust her from the Tower of Lauder. She is also mentioned as "tutrix testamentar to the Laird of Lauder ", her son. In the hearing of the 14th Margaret was represented by William Borthwick of Johnstounburn [her brother] who went surety for Margaret in the sum of 300 merks. The matter appeared to drag on into 1601 but was ultimately settled by William Lauder's death at about that time.

She married twice with seven children to Robert Lauder of that Ilk.

Married, firstly before 1580, Robert Lauder of that Ilk (k. May 1598) and secondly, before August 1601, Ralph Ker of Redpath, J.P., a cadet of Cavers. She was still living in 1634.
