Biography

Early Life & Adulthood

Johann “John” Kroeckel (né Kröckel) was born on 19 October 1862 in Hammelburg, Bavaria, Germany to Johann Kröckel, a white limer, and Margarethe Beck. He was baptized the next day at St. Johannes der Täufer Catholic Church in Hammelburg. He and his family lived in Hammelburg house #294.

He was the second oldest and had at least six siblings who were all born in Hammelburg. He worked as a manual laborer and served in the Deutscher Militar Verein before immigrating to the United States.

Life In America

John, along with his younger sister Genofeva, boarded the S.S. Dania in Hamburg, Germany on 9 August 1890 and arrived at New York City on the 23rd. He ultimately traveled to Rochester, Monroe, New York.

He married Swabian immigrant Marie Barbara Messer of Vellberg, Württemberg on 10 February 1891 at the Most Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Rochester.

John found work as a gas maker and then as a fireman, and he and Marie lived together with their infant son, John, in Ward #13 on Thomas St. at the 1892 New York State Census, after which the younger John died a few months later. They had a couple more children while living in Rochester.

At this time, John declared his intent to become a citizen of the United States on 14 February 1893 before the Deputy Clerk of the County Court of Monroe County. A few years later, the family moved to Irondequoit and eventually settled on St. Joseph Ave, where he and Marie had the remainder of their children.

John applied to become a citizen of the United States on 3 August 1896 before the County Court of Monroe County, and was ultimately approved at some point shortly thereafter.

Upon moving to Irondequoit, John worked as a laborer on a farm for a while before obtaining employment at a market as a gardener, where he worked for several years.

Death

John died on 13 September 1929 in Irondequoit and was buried four days later in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Rochester.

Obituary

KROECKEL - John Kroeckel died Friday morning at his home, St. Joseph Street, Irondeqouit, aged 66 years. He is survived by his widow, Mary Messer Kroeckel; two sons, John and Lawrence Kroeckel; one daughter, Mrs. Joseph Pung; one grandchild; a brother, Lawrence Kroeckel of Rochester, and a brother and sister in Germany. He was a member of the Deutscher Militare Verein.

Funeral Tuesday morning at 9 o'clock from the residence, and 9:30 at St. Thomas' Church.
