Biography

Maria Barbara "Mary" Kroeckel (née Messer) was born out of wedlock on 24 May 1865 in Stoeckenburg, Vellberg, Hall, Württemberg, Germany to Georg Adam Messer and Maria Katharina Sperr. She was originally born and baptized with her mother's name of Sperr, but adopted her father's name after her parents got married in 1871.

She boarded the S.S. Fulda and arrived at Castle Garden in New York City in March 1888, and went to Rochester, Monroe, New York.

Mary married Bavarian immigrant John Kroeckel on 10 February 1891 in Rochester. Together they had at least five children: John, Margaret, John G, Catherine, and Lawrence. They lived on Thomas St. in the northern part of the city before moving to Irondequoit, eventually settling on St. Joseph Ave.

Mary passed away on 7 September 1942 in Irondequoit, Monroe, New York and was buried three days later in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Rochester.
