Notes for John Kerr:
At the time of his death, John's wife, Elizabeth and his son, William, executor of his estate, had a bitter feud over his property and holdings. As set forth in the recordings of court proceedings of Powhaten county, Virginia in 1777/78, there were several listings of this feud. (pages as follows: 9, 12, 24, 26, 42, 45, 59) The result of this dispute was made final on Sept. 17, 1778, when the Chancellors decreed that the remainder of John's estate be divided as follows:
1) Elizabeth Kerr would retain ownership of Man Cain, a slave owned by John, thirteen pounds, six shillings, eight pense and thirty-one pounds, eleven shillings, seven pense.
2) Each of his children would receive forty-eight pounds, thirteen shillings and nine pence. After this listing, there is no further mention of this dispute in the aforementioned records.
