Biography
Mary Elizabeth Kelley was born on June 7, 1844, in Lawrence County, Tennessee[citation needed], the eldest of twelve children born to Richard Kelley and Martha Eaves, farmers in Lawrence County, residing there with her family.[1][2]
She married John Defoe Jr, marrying in Lawrence County on July 18, 1860[3] and having seven known children together. Mary and her family made their home in Civil District 11 of what was then Grainger County, Tennessee.[4][5]
Mary DeFoe passed away in Iron City, Tennessee[citation needed] at the age of 40 and is buried in in the DeFoe family plot in Cedar Grove Cemetery in Wayne County, Tennessee.[6]
