Biography

The daughter of DeFoe-112|John Marvin DeFoe]] and Mary Elizabeth (Kelley) DeFoe, Paralee DeFoe was born in Wayne County, Tennessee^{[citation needed]} in 1869, residing with her family in Civil District 11,^[1][2] where she attended school through the eighth grade;^[3] however, she was not able to read or write.^[4]

Paralee married George Green Gallion, marrying in Wayne County on August 20, 1890^[5] having seven children together, with five living into adulthood.^[6] They made their home Wayne County's Civil District 11, farming,^[7] moving by 1910 to Arkansas. In 1910, they rented land and a home in Gilkerson Township.^[6]

The couple may have separated; in 1920, Paralee lived with her brother, William Thomas DeFoe, and his wife, residing in Iron City, Tennessee, where Paralee listed her marital status on the 1920 federal census as "Single."^[8] By 1930, Paralee and her husband again lived together, residing in a home they had purchased in Gilkerson Township, and George Gallion farmed on his own account.^[4][3]

Widowed in 1942, Paralee Gallion passed in Gilkerson Township, Arkansas^{[citation needed]} at the age of 75 and is buried at Gibson Cemetery in Craighead County, Arkansas.^[9]

Note received regarding Jincy Parlee DeFoe:
"...I'm the great-great-great grandson of John Marvin Defoe Jr...Jincy, his daughter, was my great-great-grandmother...Her daughter Ollie Gallion, my great grandmother, was still alive when I was a young kid and told me a story about her "Grandpa Defoe"...She said that he lost his leg during the Civil War era when a tree fell on him and broke his leg...He had a cork leg for the rest of his life...I think he was 1/2 Cherokee Indian since Jincy was 1/4 Cherokee Indian.--Tim Simmons"

That John DeFoe had a one-half Cherokee mother is family legend and widely shared, but is unproven.
