Biography

Keryn Keane was born on 15th September 1956 at the Royal Women's Hospital, Carlton, Victoria, Australia to parents, Keith Keane and Silvina (Jackson) Keane I attended Pascoe Vale North Primary school and then Hadfield High School. Activities included swimming and Table Tennis. Swimming was at competition level as a member of the Brunswick Amateur Swimming Club, and then I went onto teaching and coaching on weekends and after school hours. Many hours spent training in the early morning before school and after school. Competition included club competitions, inter club district carnivals and Victorian state competitions at the old Olympic Pool in Batman Avenue, Melbourne. Table Tennis 🏓 - Taught by my father Keith (who was a Table Tennis coach) I learnt to play at the Melita Club in Coburg where dad used to play competition. Dad and I both joined the Coburg Table Tennis club and we both played Victorian Pennant competitions, I started from about the age of 11. Gaining more skills, I moved up in ranking and grade in both the adult sphere competitions and the Junior competitions, winning many accolades in my age group competitions including doubles and mixed doubles. I was selected to represent Victoria at the age of 13 as a 'sub-junior' at the annual South Australian championships. This was a yearly trek to Adelaide during January of each year. Eventually I represented Victoria in the Australian championships at the age of 16. Not long after the championships, I became unwell with a severe case of Glandular Fever and was side-lined after this and unable to train. This also affected my schooling, but I managed to go through to the final year of high school and complete Year 12. Unfortunately, due to the effects of the glandular fever, I was advised not to do any training, so this ended my burgeoning sporting career and my dream to be a Physical Education teacher.

I'd always had an interest in Biology and science, so after finishing High School, I then started working at Prince Henry's Hospital in Melbourne as a Medical Technician in Biochemistry. While working, I was also studying to do my Diploma in Medical Technology (Laboratory Science), and remained there for 15 years until I left to have my daughter Ashlee in 1987.

While caring for Ashlee, I took up a casual position at the local Melton Pool during the summer months, teaching swimming and life saving. This continued until I had my son, Matthew in 1990.

Looking for something else and another interest, I joined the local St. John Ambulance Brigade to do volunteer First Aid at various events. From this, I trained to be a First Aid instructor and went onto teach and train the public and the members of the local brigade.

Doing First Aid, I was looking to get back into the workforce and opted to study again at the age of 40, and did a Bachelor of Applied Science in Nursing. After having done First Aid at the frontline, I felt that Emergency nursing was of interest. I then decided to do a Post Graduate Diploma in Advance Nursing (Emergency). This was followed by doing a Masters in International Health Management. I will work in nursing until my retirement.

Genealogy Interests I've always had a keen interest in ancestry and family history. I started looking seriously about 2017/18 when I joined Ancestry.com and started my family tree. The interest grew and so did my family tree. My main extended family tree now has well over 3.000 people on it. I had no idea about Wikitree until about 2019 and then joined in the one-tree family. Surprisingly, I found some family connections as a couple of my direct family members profiles were already on the tree. Through Wikitree, I've had a great collaboration with a second cousin and we have done some amazing work together.

I always investigate my sources and ensure they are as accurate as possible before adding a person to the tree. As a stickler for accuracy, I often find myself checking and re-checking information. I do like to have a nice 'narrative' biography for the person where possible, to create a life story and the referencing that connects it.

What I don't like is people changing information without consultation. With many hours of painstakingly checking facts and sources to have someone come and just add or delete information without consultation is very disheartening. I have found so many mistakes and wrong connections because people don't check sources and links and other information that can give clues to the information. I am very happy to help investigate information when I have the time and will always welcome descendants with direct links to the family members whose profiles I have created, to become co-managers or on the trusted list.

Hi Keryn,

Thanks for having a Big Heart and adopting Orphan Profiles. You will want to read this After adopting orphans FAQ to understand what to do next and it explains the special attention those profiles need.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask!

Love the biography you have up for yourself now Keryn. Very interesting to read. You certainly have been a stickler for accuracy, and it continues to be a blessing having you as a cousin working on the tree.

Thanks Ben,

haven't looked at this part of the DNA matching for a while. This would be on 'my' profile? Keryn

Only if you want. I didn't answer the complaints that they made about the way it was. I've just decided to go back through the process again from the start. Works out easier.

To be honest, I'm a little confused sometimes with the DNA confirmation app. they way it's worded about 'who' you can add the blurb to. I thought it can go on 'your own' profile and the profiles of the ancestor or MRCA (Most Recent Common Ancestor) or the other person mentioned as a match. I think the 'complaint' was that we had made a profile DNA "Confirmed" but it was an ancestor that hasn't had DNA done - which I've changed now back to confident. I think the wording of the 'error message' was a tad confusing anyhow.

I think it was a little clearer this time than previously. Looks like they updated it in January.

If nothing else, going through the process of DNA Confirmations was a little easier this time. The explanations seemed to make more sense.

Hi

Thanks for the kind words on the profile for James James. I use Wikitree Sourcer for the tables, it runs on a Chromium based browser, I'm using it on Chrome and Vivaldi. It's a great tool and will search for sources on a variety of other sites, including Familsearch, Ancestry and GRO or Free BDM for UK and soon Findagrave. It also has options to generate narrative, citations etc. Thanks for the offer of co-manageing the profile but I must say no, I am currently reducing the number of profiles I manage as I exceeded the number that the watchlistsystem will handle. I would like to transfer management of your direct ancestors to you, and offer co-management of shared ancestors. I have used the dna app to add dna confirmation to the relevant profiles, but not including the profiles you manage, I did not use your Wikitree ID when doing that as I had not asked you if that was ok. That was a trial run as I had not done dna confirmation before. I would like to improve the dna citations using your Wikitree ID, but only if you agree.

Thanks Gary,

The Wikitree sourcer looks interesting, so I might investigate that as well to add to a few other profiles that have that information already. Sorry to hear you need to reduce the management of profiles, but I understand as it can become a little overwhelming. I'll take you up on the offer of co-management of our shared ancestors, that way we can lean on each other. (You seem to be a bit of a whiz at this, not unlike another distant cousin that I work with) I'm OK with the DNA confirmation and using my Wikitree ID and thanks for asking before posting. Look forward to working more with you. Cheers Keryn

Hi Keryn,

It is very timely you have asked if there is someplace you can go for help. A lot of the help pages are hard to find and the Data Doctors group is struggling with how to make it better. Just this week there has been much discussion within the group about this topic. A single page has been created with the intent of resolving this. Please take a look at it and see if you can find the information about in-line citations. Here is the URL... https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Biography_Creation_Helper

If this helps or not please make a comment on the page so we can use your feedback to improve it.

If the page doesn't help let me know and I can give you a direct link to the help page for in-lnie citations.

Cheers, Scott

Hi Keryn,

If you go to the profile and click the changes tab you can see exactly what I did to Keane-809. It was a very minor change. I changed "= Sources =" to "= Sources =" which makes it display properly. I also added "resources />" just below it which is a required tag that makes the sources display properly when in-line citations are used. You probably deleted them by accident. If you have any more questions please feel free to ask. Cheers, Scott

Hi Keryn

My name is Rose and some of my Irish ancestors were named Keane as well. We are likely cousins. Maybe the boundaries between County Clare and Wexford have changed? So both could be right.

Thank you for volunteering. You are now a full member of WikiTree.

Start with the New Member How-To Pages - they are really useful as you add profiles and learn your way around:

Let me know if you require assistance. I am happy to help. After adding my own family and ancestors I have found many cousins and distant ancestors here on WikiTree.

To Volunteer just add any surnames of interest into Tags so that you have one tag for each surname and location. By doing that, when you are confirmed as a full member you can then click on those tags, and you'll be taken to a page where you'll see other genealogists who are also following those surnames and locations. I really encourage you to explore the connections it helps you make. :-)

Don't forget to Check the Volunteer Box

Also Note There is a button to click at the bottom of the page that says Add tags and Volunteer. It is rectangular.

When you have done that one of our Greeters will confirm you as a full member so that you can Edit your Profile and enter information into WikiTree.
